a few questions about hamsters

hey all
my niece has a pet hamster and he is very loved by the whole family we have had him for a year and a half (roughly) and tonight when we picked him up he had blue eyes almost like he is blind. he usually has black eyes but tongith there is a blue circle inside of the black eye we are concerned that he may be going blind. the reason im posting this is because maybe someone on here knows something about hamster's and can give us some info or maybe someone else has had this happen to their little hammy. if anyone knows anything about this please let me know this would be greatly apreciated as my niece is only 8 and worried about her pet. thanks in advance
