A little problem with Spybot S&D

Whenever I open the Spybot icon, nothing happens. Nothing pops up or anything. The only thing that happens is that the Spybot process starts and takes up like 99% of my CPU time. Does anybody else have this problem? And are there any fixes?

 

I don't know if it the newer versions doing this, but the one on my wife's XP system and the one on my Vista one, both take a while to start up. I think it is because it is updating itself or because the description list is getting so large. (Ours are at over 100,000 items)
How long do you wait?
Have you tried un-installing itand re-installing?

 

Sometimes, nothing ever happens even when I wait for a very long time. I haven't tried reinstalling it yet, but I think that it might just be the definitions like you said. By the way, there's never any hard disk activity that I can hear.

I figured if Halo recommends a-squared, it must be good. I had it before, but opted to go with Spybot as it has always been a good app. I think I am going to dump Spybot

 

Oh I actually have asquared right now. I guess I'll use that instead. By the way, how effective is the immunize function in spybot anyways?

 

It adds known bug sites to your hosts list to prevent you from going there and getting nasties. That's a good thing.
Now, I don't know if I will dump Spybot. LOL
Spybot has always been very good at finding nasty stuff. I used it (in combo with a couple of other specialized apps) to clean a friends PC that was so bogged down with malware and pop-ups, she couldn't hardly even access her mail. I even had to bring the apps on disc because I couldn't get to MG and download them. SpyBot caught everything except a couple things and the other apps took care of that.

Yes it immunizes Firefox as well.

That slow start up problem in Spybot v1.5.1.15 was actually fixed in its "Helloween Beta" (their spelling) v1.5.1.18; and v1.5.1.19 was the Release Candidate for v1.5.2.

V1.5.2 is now available as a stable final; it starts right up, and the incomplete immunization issues have also been fixed. V1.5.2 will be available in an integrated update shortly (if not already), but if you don't want to wait for the integrated update, the full version is available for download here at MG right now.

I'm personally glad they got that sorted out because I was hesitant to recommend Spybot S&D to anyone during the v1.5.1.xx period. Now it seems to be working as it should :cool .

BTW... you may notice that the total number of immunized items is less in this version. It is not a bug or a glitch, it's just a different way that Spybot addresses "system accounts." I didn't understand their explanation well enough to re-explain it, but an explanation is available in their forums if you are interested. In short, it's all good .
