A name I remember from when I first started here ...

    Hiya fellas, I remember when I first joined this site there was a lovely young chap on here going by the name of DomLuc. I noticed he is not here anymore and all posts made by him in some of my threads are now missing. Was he removed (YES!!), or did something else happen? Does anyone else remember, I actually have a post by Dr. Moriarty where he quoted him when they were arguing in one of my threads that still lingers.

    The final two posts are the ones:

    The last post is by a user that confirms that SpyBot S&D, contrary to that stated in the guide, uses MSCONFIG selective start up.

    The penultimate post is by MG Moderator 'Halo' who also contradicts the guide, regarding CCleaner, showing he has tested CCleaner versions introduced since mid-2008, and they do *not* invoke MSCONFIG when disabling a start up.

    Now, I personally use Start Up CPL because it has always been shown to be safe in not using msconfig, and is a very easy tool.
    However, I have observed many people use CCleaner too without any side effects.
    Either way, maybe that Guide 'Dealing With Start Up Processes' needs updating and clarifying because there is contradictory information flying around to the confusion of many.
    Point 1: The final two post are by chaslang. Re-read his replies!

    "bootini"=dword:00000000
    "services"=dword:00000000
    "startup"=dword:00000000
    Because CCleaner does not change the values of these keys, you have no way of knowing the Ccleaner was being used to control the startups and it just looks like there are stuck registry entries that need to be cleaned up.

    As far as I know, Spybot does not use these MSconfig keys but I will have to retest with the current version to be sure.
    Point 2: I personally asked chaslang about Glary Utilities and that's why it was also added in the link I posted, and the guide was updated.

    Until they un-install a program without undoing the CCleaner controlled startup. Refer to my last exchange with you on this matter.

    How long are you going to get bumping heads with the Co-Owners, Administrators, and the trained Malware Fighters here?

    Yeah, so does anyone know what ever happened to him, or even remember him. I know if I don't ask the question it'll be annoying me that I never knew. :p

    He was banned due to not playing nice with others (a not great rant at Tim aka MA was the final straw), he also created many other guises that where also banned, may have new ones here now but they will also get banned at some point if found.

    Just goes to show no-one is safe, you could be here for years, have many posts but that means nothing, no follow the rules and your gone.

    Often wondered about the name.
    Dom Luc sounded a lot like Dumb Luck.

    And yes, me and him got crossways several times because of his "I know better than you" attitude.

    I think some big things people have problems are the "I think Iam better then you" with whatever it may be computer related. Or the people I like to read where they think the are better then Malware fighters and question them.

    Most of us here have at some time fallen foul of the forum rules but we accept a warning and change our ways,

    Dom and a number of others did not heed that warning and disqualification was the result.

    Yeh I thought that may have been the case. I must admit, he was really, really annoying lol.

    And yeah hrlow I always tried to figure out what DomLuc could have meant, and thats the best I could come up with lol.

    I believe the phrase you're looking for is "I know I am better than you" ;)

    It's a common problem for "geeks" to have, and when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. A geeks/nerd/computer wiz/whatever-label-you-prefer typically has a lot of their identity invested in and built upon the fact that they are smarter than most people around them. That's normal, and in several cases that is actually a fact... most of us here were probably at the top of our classes in school, we pick things up quicker than the average person does. Simply put, geeks tend to be very intelligent.

    And then they come here. Where everyone is a geek. Where we are no longer above average, we are average among peers who are as intelligent than we are, or in my case a lot more intelligent than I am :p

    Que insecurity. You're not special anymore, you're not smarter than everyone else... one of the foundations of your existence has been shattered. And in that situation, most of us become very rude and unpleasant to deal with, especially those who chose the wrong way to handle that situation, which is to try and prove that they're still smarter than everyone around them.

    Basic human nature, in other words.

    True, the "geek" may be smarter than a lot of other people around them about computers.
    But put them into the real world and you will find that there are different types of "geeks".
    I couldn't operate a backhoe if I had to, but I have seen workers on them that were like artists.(mech-geek)
    Same thing about different occupations. People expert in one field can be ignorant as anything outside of their own field.
    I'm sure you are "geek" enough to know what I'm saying.

    Exactly. A geek is just another way of saying "highly specialized expert in a narrow field". My hair stylist is a super-geek when it comes to coloring hair. She knows everything there is to know and more about formulas, their ingredients, the effects various mixes have on hair, how to control every aspect of the chemical reactions involved in coloring, et cetera... but she couldn't operate an Android phone to save her life. I call her the color geek. LOL

    Steve_East9 > DomLuc > MarkTrent, and other a.k.a's.

    I don't believe that any human being is The ultimate authority on anything. I came here to learn, was received graciously by most, and am trying to give back to this community - while still learning after three years.

    *Having said that - I find who refuse to acknowledge that they have something to learn, to be rather "irksome". {An admitted personality flaw} :p

    Well it would seem he hasn't been around for a bit, I mean I haven't seen any posts that come close to his ... arrogant way of putting things. So I assume hes gone. For good hopefully.

    And Mimsy,

    I still don't understand that. I mean, (and YES I'm quoting Star Wars here!! :p), there is something Qui Gon says that I never forget. "There's always a bigger fish." In others words, there's always gonna be someone out there smarter than you, uglier than you, prettier than you, taller than you, shorter than you etc etc. Instead of bickering with the person, why not learn from them. I made a mistake recently in a thread where I simply assumed MSE comes pre-installed with Win 7, only to find out it doesn't. I apologised, explained why I thought so, and came off with more knowledge. But, even still, you are right it may not be as far as Human Instinct, but Human Nature, as crude as it may be.

    Hi All

    To be honest and not aimed at DomLuc et al user names or anyone else infact but a generalisation is that somer members post great tech replies (DomLuc did this in his replies where bang on in most cases) but they dont play well with authority or others in the debate type threads, so members are great at debate but suck at tech threads and rely on Google-ating the answer....

    At some point it both types of member dont fit in on a given forum, so a parting happens, it can be amicable or not, some members removed do start new IDs and if they are found then they ARE removed, its a rare thing to be given a 3rd chance as some that are current here have been giving this as their accounts have not been removed on sight.

    No-one is safe, not even me, if I fudge up too much I would be gone and rightly so, forums in some cases have little or no rules and some have alot of rules, we are bit in the middle with wiggle room, so never try to push it too far :)

    I belong to I bet over 100 forums that I actually log into. On some I have zero posts, some over 5000. I have seen this in EVERY forum. Doesn't matter if it's fly fishing, welding, amplifier repair or basket weaving. There will always be people who HAVE to be correct, that's why I generally have low post counts at forums. I would rather read, think things through and let others supply the input sometimes dangerous or comical. I don't know what it is about the anonymity that the internet gives people to make them act the way they do. Would these people do this in real life? Yes, some do and usually with sad endings. I usually don't try to point out when someone is wrong outright because I could be wrong myself but I maybe give my idea on things. I will step in when some DIY person tells another to put 14AWG wire on a 40 amp breaker or something along them lines that could kill people. I don't even know where I am heading with this, just that if a person has to resort to name calling over trying to prove their point I think they should maybe turn the computer off and catch some sunshine or something.

    Or read a post like, (just a example, I didn't read it here.) "NO bleachbit is the ONLY cleaner program worth running, CCleaner, Cleanup! and all others are complete worthless trash, END OF STORY" I just think, wow dude, xanax could help that you know...

    I'm sorry for the Off Topic comment, but the above belongs in a sig somewhere. :-D

    Just for an on topic remark, I will say that it was a shame the poster in question didn't play well with others, because as Halo point out, he was a huge help to a lot of people in the support forums. The guy knew his stuff.

    @ Mimsy

    Spot on Mims, my field is narrow, its desktop windows, while I know networking, security, office etc they are not my expertise at all, I know more about the medical diseases I deal with in work more than those, but then I could be classed a geek in the medical area I know a fair bit about.

    @Laura... superb post, I agree 100%

    I really would love Dom/Steve et al, back on the forum in a split second, but you have to and I have to respect the wishes of the owners and collective admins/mods, we do not take issues lightly and debate them alot before taking action, so its not a knee jerk thing for us.... it talked about alot, and the final decision is well just final.

    Rare as I say to get a 3rd chance as most are given a 2nd.

    What is the saying?
    Fool me once, shame on you.
    Fool me twice, shame on me.
    Never heard it go farther than that.

    Have to agree, even though we had butted heads.
    He did know his stuff, but no reason to rub people wrong ways because of it.
    More of an attitude thing.

    Lol funnily enough I did think of this all along, I never brought it up, mainly for the reason buck just pointed out ...

    ... So I just decided to see if someone else saw it and was gonna say it. Obviously I wasn't the only one with the opinion. He reminds me of an old mechanic. Really knows his stuff about cars, but doesn't wanna know about the new stuff and doesn't wanna listen to others and find out. Except change it to computers :p

    I know him and I had a few tussles in the forums as well as a fiew in PMs, but probably the biggest one I saw was with Dr. Moriarty as already posted in my 1st post. I never saw the one with MA.
