CCleaner is a great program and I have had know problems using it as it is configured. If you use it to clean your registry check yes for the back-up option, though infact I have never had to use it with CCleaner. Hope that helps

    I agree with BCGray.

Take a look at post #12 in http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=94835; it has some screen shots from CCleaner. Also, CCleaner has a "Quick Tour ..." on their site. It can be helpful to new users.

Note: If you download the "Standard" version, it includes the Yahoo toolbar but you can easily elect not to install that by unchecking a box on a screen that appears soon after starting the CCleaner installation.

CCleaner's main feature is removing cookies, temp and old files etc.

It has a very basic Registry cleaner included, accessed in the "issues" button.

To clean temp files etc, you simply start the program, and select Run Cleaner.

To exclude certain cookies, Options->Cookies, or you can uncheck files and folders in the Windows and Applications tab.

If you don't want to use the Registry scan, don't click "issues".

If you want to check what it will find, without deleting anything, you can use "Analyze".

It can also uninstall programs, same as Add/Remove, via the Tools menu, but it also has a delete feature for entries that are hard to remove once uninstalled.

Yes, it will remove what's ticked in Windows and Applications tabs.

Read the steps I posted, it's pretty simple.

No, you don't need to turn off System Restore. Not a good idea.

And no, you don't need to restart.

Unless you didn't let it remove anything it may have found there is no reason to run the scan again right now.

Insomniac I think MOUMANTAI might be referrring to advise recieved in Malware with regards to running CCleaner then turning off System Restore to erase any nasties stored in its files

MOUMANTAI in answer to your last question "should I run it again"? I run CCleaner every day just to delete any and ALL garbage that may have been picked up, it is a great utility to have around.

Sorry Toni 1947 slow on the keyboard today your right on my reread

You are going to get cookies 9 out of 10 sites you visit...that's NORMAL.
They are simple text files that help identify you at the website that placed them on your machine and are NOT a major threat.
CCleaner deletes them when you run it.

but why are they called spyware when thier not

i think i went to those sites once but i havnt been back since

You can turn off System Restore after you have used CCleaner but you do have to do so knowing that you will not be able to restore to any previous point other than the present. Go to Control Panel/System/System Restore/ Check Turn off System Restore then apply.MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU THEN GO BACK AND TURN SYSTEM RESTORE BACK ON Otherwise you will have NO system restore Hope that helps

They are called spyware...and mistakenly IMO...because they identify you to the website that placed them.
Tribal Fusion is the cookie you get here at MGs,PCWorld uses Double Click (if I remember right)

You should only turn System Restore off, after you have disinfected your machine.

Not smart doing it before. No files in System Restore are active till a Restore Point is used, and it's better having an infected Restore Point than none at all.

Anyway, MediaPlex and DoubleClick are tracking cookies used by various and numerous websites.

If they concern you, delete them from your folder C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\

Mysteries of the internet ....you can hop on for a moment to a trusted site and will have cookies and tracking crap that's picked up just going through cyber space. Weird, huh?
However, if they show up when you aren't/havent been on line ...then suspect spyware/malware and run the read and do first:
Read and run first - Malware section

    Another way to see them:

    Q. How to See Cookies You've Accepted:
    A. In Internet Explorer 6.0

    On your tool bar, click:

    1.Tools, then

    2.Internet Options.

3.Under the tab General (the default tab) click

    4.Settings, then

    5.View Files.

    Time for 'Tough Love'
You are stressing out over NOTHING to be worried about!
You DO NOT need to do a system restore and YES, the cookies will be back and a bunch more than you have now.
They are part of the Internet and part of the way it works.
    They are not DANGEROUS.

You can't remove "all of your registry with CCleaner". That's impossible.

Any registry program can cause problems if not used correctly.

That's why they have a backup feature, and why creating a Restore Point prior is a good idea.
