May I suggest that a small computer monitor icon, or similar, be displayed next to our avatar, or nickname, to show that our Computer specs are available for viewing, by simply clicking on the icon.

At present, there appears to be no indication that our computer specs are loaded in our signature. Not that I could see anyhow. Mine aren't loaded, as yet.

This would make it immediately obvious to those replying to a question, or trying to solve a problem, what OS, RAM, Hard drive/s fitted, etc., we are dealing with.

All replies, for and against, welcome. Bazza

I always think EVERYTHING you say is profound -- you must be very wise (except it's obvious you had a problem with spelling so um -- maybe not) ;)

No, really, I don't know anything about the logistics of this proposal but it sure does sound like a great idea. When I first came to this board I had a ton of problems with my PC and it was rather tedious typing my specs over and over again whenever I started a new thread about another problem I encountered.

It'd involve adding a field to the users profile table in the database, and changing a few templates and code to match the changes.

Thanks MA. I guess if it was easy, it would already have been done. Hope you had a good holiday.

@PEGG. Thanks for the compliments. (or is that complements :D ;) ).
But I thought I was a good speller. Main trouble is I am a 2 fingered typist with large hands. I press 2-3 keys at a time occasionally. Bazza

How come you guys have your specs in your siggy anywho, is it a "my hardware is bigger than your hardware" thing?

"Software is just as good, it's just how you use it!"

Geez, theres just.. so much to work with that it's just too easy. Back to lurking...

    Heeheeehee :)

would be a good idea tho as it would shorten some sigs that read like War & Peace ;)

ROFLMAO. Good one Wenchie.:) Yep, could be a bloke thing.:D But it would help us stop asking for specs, over and over, time and time again.:p
    Keep lurking. Regards. Bazza

Bah, that should be profile info, not sig info. Instead of a different Icon and another page (oh the code) maybe an Input box on the edit info page.

    "Biography"
    "Location"
    "Interrests"
    "Occupation"
    "Rig Specs"

    Seems logical to me..

That was my assumption when I thought about the problem. Lots of other forums have extra fields, like Linux Distro or Biggest fish caught or whatever! :p

The point of my original suggestion is that it should be an icon, or something, readily visible, and self explanatory, to show that computer specs, hardware mainly and OS, have been loaded and are readily available (to be seen by anyone wishing to help/reply).

Call it what you will, I don't care, but just let us SEE it. Bazza

Dont see a way to do it yet, there may be a hack which is tough because many hacks get wiped out on new updates. Also, we just did a few upgrades and are still working on glitches, which many of you dont notice.

Could it be additional information in the profile? ;)

No need to tie it in to the sig/specs initially. Just show an icon and we can look for ourselves. I assume this would be a lot easier. Bazza

IMO, I think sigs that have specs in them should be wiped. I mean, really, who cares. I never, ever, ever, read them, and the small % of the time I do, its e-peen bragging.

I mean, does anyone really care about my AMD 64 3800+ PC with 2gb ram, or my P4 2.8c with 1.5gb of ram? Or my Powerbook G4 1.67ghz w/ 512mb ram?

When put into that perspective, its just bragging.

    My two cents.

Thanks Adrynalyne. Guess I never thought of it as bragging 'coz my own specs aren't worth bragging about. File the idea as good in theory but .......

Well, there is nothing wrong with bragging. Everyone is proud of something. But to make a brag field for a forum...IMO, it doesn't add value to MG.

Its not my decision , but thats how I look at it.

Go back to bigbazza’s first post…here’s the quote…”This would make it immediately obvious to those replying to a question, or trying to solve a problem, what OS, RAM, Hard drive/s fitted, etc., we are dealing with”…..

MG’s here to, ya blow off steam, but sometimes help each other…..maybe make it part of welcome page, when you first register…….

But, you’ll never keep people from bragging, won’t happen……wobbles

A very small percentage of the posts here require posting all system specs, and on top of that, the majority of people who dont list their specs when having a hardware problem--don't know them to start with, so wouldn't use the feature.

So it still doesn't make the idea that useful.

Once again, this is purely my opinion.

I see your point Adyn. and it's a good point at that ;)

But I also see Bazza's point as I've seen people asking for specs, if it's there it saves a bit of time surely?? (Just my opinion ;))

  26. bigbazza

Lots of opinions, for and against, as expected. If MG can do it, and want to do it, so much the better. If not, we will live, and continue on, without it.

If people use it to brag about, so be it. I'll leave it to the learned folk (and programmers) at MG. Bazza
