Just pulled my first -bigadv WU with the a3 core last night. I've not had many a3's come through on my rig. The last one was maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago during the server dust up.
I'm still running Ubuntu 9.04 under VMPlayer with a 3.36 GHz overclock on my 920 and first indications from HFM are as follows - TPF changed from about 43 Minutes to 57 minutes, PPD changed from about 53,000 to 57,000. That's roughly a 5% increase in points. (The first values are from a2 cores.)
I'll let you know how things stand in a couple of days when it finishes up.;)

    WOW impressive PPD lbmest.

Ooops, that's what I get for posting from work after looking at home.:-o
Credit for WU is 57,000 as opposed to 53,000. Spread over 3 point some odd days will be an increase of 1,000 PPD roughly.

Hehehe, 55K PPD would be really impressive from a single 920!!!;) Probably on liquid nitrogen.:-D I should have a rudimentary bench test going by Friday PM with the stock HS/F and stock speeds and I should be rockin' up the MG stats once again! (within a few days).

I'll get and install the H50 next week sometime for a real OC test if'n it's not too hot out there like today. 92 for a high which should be a record! Plus the A/C seems to be dying! There goes the Fermi for another month.:cry Priorities.:)

All puts my 3349PPD to shame, but I only social folding :)

That's a decent PPD Halo, nothing to be ashamed of at all! LOL @ social folding. At least you're getting good points for the power you use. ;) Fold on brotha!

Does me better than a 75% complete EUE. (No points at all for that.:cry)
Don't discount your social folding Halo. There's still many machines out there chugging along at less than your PPD.

Had a couple of weird errors after that and an Unstable Machine but it automatically downloaded a new a3 core and I'm up to 6% on the next one.
(Damn, 3 days down the tubes.)

    Well crapola.
These a3 bigadv are tricky. Had the next one up about 25% but was running at 1h 2m per frame and was not getting the bonus according to HFM. Rebooted with a slight increase in bclock to up my overclock and the darn thing errored out at start up, so another day down the tubes.

@ augie - Make sure you are at 3.4 Ghz or more before you run these in a VM.
Anything less flirts with a 100 hour deadline and that knocks off the bonus points. My 3.36 goes up and down on the 1h TPF.

  9. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

I'll quote myself cause that 3.36 Ghz ain't enough. 4 days down the tubes with only the basic core credit. Missed the deadline by a smidge.:cry
Soon as I hit the top spot, the proverbial dung hit the oscillating air mover.
Upped my bclock to get over a 3.4 Ghz and dropped my memory clock a tad and we'll see if it's stable enough for folding.

Jeez man, that's gotta hurt.:eek :( Good luck.

my question is what would be a good cpu to do these -bigadv without having to over clock?

I am curious about the specs. (motherboard/cpu/ram) ect...

    Thx. for any input.

Oscillating is up and down. You mean rotating.:p

Geez collinsl, kick a man when he's down. (And twice even.)

Actually fans can oscillate and rotate. Not in the scientific meaning but back and forth.;)

An oscillating fan is a fan that rotates side to side while blowing. A great alternative to box fans for cooling rooms, an oscillating fan creates a breeze throughout the room rather than just blowing in one direction. An oscillating fan generally has either a base or a stand that is stationary, while the unit that houses the fan moves separately.

Sorry about the double post - I have corrected it now.

But what type of fan is referenced in the metaphor? No one knows.

Anyway, back on topic: Looks like some good figures there, Ibmest.

    Only The Shadow knows.

Well, this situation gets better all the time.rolleyes
Couldn't pick a new unit, (waited for 2 days with about 40 bad packet from server errors) and finally took the -bigadv flag off and used the -advmethods flag. Immediately picked up an a3 WU (P6040 project) and am at about 11,000 PPD on that one. Maybe my errors got me an Unstable Machine flag but there was no notification like there usually is if that happens. I'll run a couple of these, about 40 hours worth, and see if I can go back to the -bigadv flag.
On a side note, the OC was increased to 3.57 Ghz and is humming along nicely at about the same temps as before.:-D

You can run the -bigadv on the quad cores with Hyper Threading. It's the overclock that gets you the bonus points though. If you don't get the bonus points there is not that much advantage to spending the money for the output available.
Looking on the Folding Forum, there was one guy who had the i7 980 Gulftown 6 core at stock speed that used a linux OS that folded nicely in the 31K PPD range but he had a 295 card also folding so I don't know what the CPU alone would do. (Maybe 20K PPD?) But you're talking $1,000 for the processor alone.
A mild overclock should not be that hard to come up with for the less pricey CPUs. Hellfire my 920 is at 3.57 Ghz now and I'm a OC newbie. The temps are only 30 to 35 C above ambient (mid 60's C) and nowhere near the 95 C throttling point.

Well, all I can say is I'm getting ~10K PPD @ stock according to HFM but as you can see the actual results are bit less. Jeez man, a %35 OC on your chip! Not bad at all for an OC n00b.;):-D BTW, mine is plain SMP2 running in Windows.

What range of temps do you have with the stock cooler augie? And I'd be curious if that changes when Franky Jr gets a home of his own. Or are you planning to go with the case and H50 at the same time?

30 idle and 50 full tilt. Case and Hydro at the same time is the plan. Sorry.

Finally got the -bigadv issue under control but the way the temps have been here lately I'm gonna pull the plug on my GPUs for awhile.
My comp sits in the same room as the thermostat for the main floor of the house and the AC unit has been running too much here lately. Having the GPUs down for awhile will help with that so I'll see how the a3's do by themselves.
There goes the idea of catching up with augie.:(

Hehehe.:p I've got heat issues of my own as my VREG temp hovers around 100C!:eek Going to have to start with stock voltages again and work my way up slowly with the voltages. I did go to the eVGA forums and I'm not the only one with that issue.

For those that don't know yet, the Linux a3 -bigadv are on hold so folks may as well switch to Win SMP2 setup as I found one gets better points than through a VM for the smaller stuff like the 6014's etc. or go to -bigadv in Windows.:)

On a personal side note, I finally have the -bigadv working in Windows and it's going pretty well I think.;) Perhaps I'll try and pusg the OC in the fall as there are folks who are getting 4.4GHz with my board and chip. I want it!:-D

Those are great numbers there augie.:cool
I certainly hope Pande gets their act together on those a3 cores quickly. My numbers suck right now. I think some changes will be made here pretty soon.;) And that OC looks good from here. Great results.

Whew, finally got my first ever -bigadv!:dancer:celebrate Jeez man, the wait was excruciating but all's well that end's well. So in view of that, I'm not touching the OC until the fall, if ever.:major
