    Log is attached

Ran Registrar Lite. Found 3 keys with csrss.exe, deleted all three. They didn't come back after reboot.

attached is startup list from HJ.
There is one line in it withe csrss.exe. I think it is Shellexplorer. Tried to find it on C: but couldn't. I'm probably looking in the wrong place.

Opened autoexec.bat file it came up to a dos window with not much in it, then said this doss application has ended.
Couldn't open config.sys...don't know what program to open it with

The csrss.exe error still came up on reboot and I still can't open any web pages. The machine is also not shutting correctly.....it gets to the windows is shutting down screen and just stays there. Have to use the power button to shut down.????????????????????????????????????? I'm lost..... need a map

Edit the below line from system.ini. It is the cause of your error message:

    shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Csrss.exe

You need to change it so it reads like:

    shell=Explorer.exe

You don't look for it on drive C, you just edit the system.ini file.

Windows 98 shutdown problems have pages written about them at Microsoft. From software problems and patches to hardware conflict issues. You should look at MS's Knowledgebase articles.

By the way, with config.sys and autoexec.bat, you need to look at them with an editor (like notepad for example). You probably double clicked on autoexec.bat which runs the batch program. Anyway, we don't need to look at these now.

Do you think fixing that line is going to solve my inability to open web pages??

We will address this issue after we get this error fixed. Go ahead and do what Chas mentioned to fix this error.

OK I fixed the line and the error went away. :D So we have the shutdown problem and the inability to open a web page. Both of which were not happening until after I downloaded Kas and tried to run it??? IE or Firefox cannot find a web page. She is on 56kfax dial up connection. I have uninstalled Kas so I guess that didnt have anything to do with it, unless and messed with the browsers some how.
    Thanks again,

Close ALL browsers before doing this!

Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings:

    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites.

Okay! Explain to me what sites you can visit and what happens when you try to access them.

  9. tblue

    tblue Corporal

Can't visit any sites. After the dialup connects and you open the browser (IE or Firefox) it looks for the pages but comes up it can't be found

    First, download WinSock 2 Repair

Run this, reboot and reconnect. See if you can connect now. If not let me know!

Let me get everything straight, you can dialup, connect but cant browse using IE and Firefox, correct?

Now, Check your IP adress, tell me if it starts with 169.

Try to ping yahoo.com or msn.com see if you get a time out error.

Also, I wanted to add, have you ever had Norton AntiVirus/Internet Security installed?

    If so, what version?

  15. tblue

    tblue Corporal

    Thats right

She checked it using the "ipconfig"prompt. It came up
    IP address- 0.0.0.0

She had Norton installed but I removed it. I don't know what version it was. She never updated it though I know that.
    Tried pinging yahoo...didn't work.

    Ah!

Okay, before we continue I want you to run these utilities.

    Please download Rnav & Rnis.

These tools will cleanup Norton AntiVirus & Norton Internet Security up to version 2003 Professional. These tools will remove everything relating to Norton.

This tool will cleanup any leftovers of Norton AntiVirus. When running this tool it will prompt you when you run it "Would you like to exit now and try this" click NO. Now, Select Norton AntiVirus 2003/Norton AntiVirus 2003 Professional and click OK.

Note: You will be prompted to reboot when this tool is complete, please do so that settings can be applied.

Probably would be a good idea to run every install of Norton. Dont reboot until the LAST one is thru.

Let me know, this may take care of your problem as I have had this happen before. Let me know if it doesnt and we will try some more things.

Do you think if I reformat it will solve the problem??

  24. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

Formatting will fix your problem however you will lose all data currently on the drive. Not to mention will have to reinstall everything back.

This can be fixed if you like but will take some time and a little work. Its up to you!

  25. tblue

    tblue Corporal

Well did the formatting and everything came out alright. Thanks for the link.
The only thing I'm having problems with is her settings. Her desktop looks like its in safe mode. Web pages are screwed up. The font is strange, the colors are wrong, the page takes up the whole screen but can only see half the page. I've tried every settings option I can find but nothing works
    Any suggestions??

    Okay!

    First:
Go to this website, type in your serial number. This number is located on the side or back of the tower.
    Second:
If you cant find the drivers above then download the following utility.

If you still have a problem, post this in the Software or Driver Forum.

    Good Luck!:)
