About:Blank Problem

I have thoroughly gone through every step in "Read Me First Before Asking For Support". None of the scans found anything. Then I examined the Hijack This log line by line, following the steps in the "No Hijack This Log Files Before Reading This Tutorial". I could find nothing that looks like it shouldn't be there. I am using Firefox for my browser....but....the About:Blank window pops up when I am using eBay's Turbo Lister, which I found out loads Internet Explorer as it uses the IE HTML rendering engine. I use this program off-line as much as possible, but it has to connect to the Internet in order to perform certain functions. So far About:Blank has only popped up when I was off-line, but I fear it is only a matter of time until it catches me on-line and then I'll get the full effect.

If anyone can suggest a next step for me to take I would appreciate it as I am out of ideas.

    Thanks.

If you are offline, what page do you expect to get?

If I am offline I expect to get the same blank about:blank window I am now getting. The Turbo Lister program sometimes has to go on-line and my fear is that if the about-blank window pops up during the time I am on-line it will take me somewhere on the web I don't want to go. My friend had this and ultimately the window popped up in the middle of everything he tried to do - even when he was off-line. The windows popped up faster and faster until they were so plentiful that he could not do anything productive on his computer. This is the effect I am hoping to avoid. It ain't pretty.

I still don't understand what you problem is! Are you having hijack problems? It does not sound like it to me.

What is it that you want us to do? If you think you have a malware related issue, follow the steps below:

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

As I said previously, I *did* all the steps in "READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal" before I posted and yes, the programs I used are the latest versions.

Is it perfectly normal for an empty IE Explorer window entitled About:Blank to suddenly pop up when you're off line and working in another program?? I've used IE and Turbo Lister for a number of years this has never happened to me until recently.

My friend also had this happen even immediately after a reboot. When he connected to the Internet the window became populated with a list of links. Then another "about:blank" window popped up and also became populated and another and another. When we rebooted, was off the Internet and not using IE, blank about:blank windows popped up one after another so often that they got in the way of any program he was trying to use. I am trying to prevent this second stage from happening on my computer by finding out where the "about:blank" window is coming from and killing it for good.

So what is it about my problem you don't understand?

Sounds like you have the About:Blank nasty. Look for tools on this site to remove it.

What is confusing me is that it sounds like you set your PC to display an about blank page? So nothing is wrong with that. If you are being hijacked to about blank what normally happens is the address bar will show about:blank but there is actually a page (often some kind of search page) being displayed.

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99.1 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

If you mean is IE set to go to a blank page upon opening.....no, it goes to my msn. Also, I have a dial-up connection, so I don't connect unless I actually need to be on the internet. The IE window with about:blank in the address bar has always popped up when I was not connected. I think if I had been online there would have been the completed search page. My Hijack This log is attached.

As I expected! You do not have an about blank hijack! Your log is clean!

I guess that explains why I couldn't find anything in the log that looked like it shouldn't be there. Thanks for your time. I still can't help wondering why that window keeps popping up - maybe it's a problem with Turbo Lister.

    Thanks again.

I cannot help you with Turbo Lister. I don't use eBay or that program. You could try the software forum. But I don't really see that there is any problem!
