I have a virus and about:blank is my new homepage, which now opens to www[dot]sysnetsecurity[dot]com/ along with a bunch of anti-malware ads popping up and a generally slow system. I'd really appreciate any assistance in getting rid of this.

I ran the about:blank simplified removal and am posting the results:

    1- ran standard cleanup procedure
2- neither of the 3 bad services were on my system so skipped to the cleaning procedure and ran HSremove, about:buster, about:buster in safe mode, and HJT. results below

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You do not have an about:blank hijacker problem and as such, you have no need for using about:Buster or HSremove. You should have read the sticky threads, starting with www.syssecuritysite.com, safetydefender.com, SecurityBulletin.net - removal Run it first and save the smitfiles.txt log to attach to your next message. Then continue on to the below steps.

You have multiple malware problems. Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments. MAKE SURE YOU install HijackThis properly because you have it installed incorrectly right now.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
