Ok I have a problem I need to replace my IDE CD/DVD writer drive and I just found out (googleing) that all IDE writers are discontinued by all manufacturers. WHY it didnt say but now I dont know what to do. Can a SATA be used with somekind of adapter ? ? Could you please email me jerryangie@ccrtc.com with the answer.:confused:confused

I think any adapter will be hit and miss. They in general are always a little flaky from my experience (although I have never used a PCI SATA card).

This store on Ebay still has some. You don't have to install the secure disc software.

And you can always try a local PC shop. They probably have tons of used ones sitting in a box. I'm guessing $10. It would be hit and miss but you could get a couple if they were that price.

Other than that I think an external DVD might be a good compromise but am not sure if your PC will boot to it depending on how old your PC is.

Newegg.com, TigerDirect.com and Amazon.com all have IDE DVD burners for sale. As sach says though finding a good used PC shop is a good idea anyways. They usually seem to know what you're talking about when you try to ask questions as opposed to the sales jockeys at Best Buy who just want to push overpriced cables and don't know much about anything else.

    cabbiinc, got links?
New egg has one DVD ROM IDE, no burners
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827100067

Of the 24 listed burners here http://www.newegg.com/CD-DVD-Burners/SubCategory/ID-5
the one listed as IDE is for a Dell XPS computer
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1KT0ET1862
So in essence, New Egg has zilch, unless remrafka does happen to have a Dell XPS computer.

TigerDirect has one IDE drive and it is a CD ROM and DVD ROM So it can't burn anything.
So in essence, TigerDirect has zilch.

Please show Amazon links for remrafka who is looking for an CD/DVD IDE burner.

Thanks for all the great input bottom line I do want the burner. I have my own barebone kit I put together from Tiger Direct. All my old drives were still good so I put them in my new computer, that was 4 years ago. I did see a place that had REFURBISHED LG IDE drives, anyone know about how reliable these might be? Or should I just get an adapter or just an EXTERNAL USB BURNER ?

If the computer doesn't have a problem with USB, I'd go the external route.
I have a LiteOn CD/DVD external burner which I move around my computers running Win 2K, XP, 7 and linux.
