Major Attitude's novella "Read Me...", in the section "Scanning & Cleaning Steps", I boot into the Safe mode and do the online scans with Trend & Symantec". That much is clear.

I have all the apps you suggested on my desktop in the normal mode (Ad-Aware SE thru HSRemove) but when in the Safe Mode, I notice none of the apps are there. My question(s):

    1) Should they be there in the Safe Mode?
    2) If not, do i get out of Safe and go back into Normal to complete the McAfee AVERT Stinger and the others or do I download the missing apps?

We did not say to put them on the Desktop? Every user account has there own Desktop which means they would only be visible to that user. When you logged in in safe mode, are you still the same user?

Look at the Tip given in the READ ME FIRST. It suggests a good place to store the downloads. Cluttering up the Desktop is not a good idea.

But wait....am I misunderstanding you. Did you put all the downloaded files on your Desktop or are you saying you already installed programs and cannot find them in safe mode?

No, it doesn't give me that option. I have to login as the "administrator"

for the latter question, I had S&D & Ad-Aware previously and they are not there in Safe mode. But you're right, you did say just to 'unzip' it to a folder. Should I unzip the files while i'm in the Safe mode during the cleanup process?

Do you have other user accounts? And do they have Admin priviledges?

Some files need to be installed not just unzipped. You can unzip them any time.
You need to verify that Spybot and Ad-Aware are the same versions we want you to use. Ad-Aware SE does prompt you when you install it, as to whether it should be installed for all users.

Yes, my wife does but she is never on the PC. Not too sure if she has Admin rights or not.

Can I/Should I install in the safe mode?

When you boot to safe mode you only see the Administrator login.... right?

When you boot normal and the Windows Welcome page comes up, which user accounts show?

    Correct.

I only see my account and my wifes

Okay! Let's be clear! When you say your account does it have a name or is it Administrator?

If yours, do you have Administrator rights?

Okay! Let's try to make some progress. Just loging to an account with Admin rights and install the applications as required. All the items that do not need to be installed should just be extract to the own directories (not on the Desktop). Then boot to safe mode and see what you can run. If you cannot run in safe mode for whatever reason. Do everything in normal boot mode (just tell me which).

Post your results. If still having a problem after running all the scans then follow the directions below and post your HijackThis log:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following: your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message.(Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

When I go into Safe mode, all I see is "Admin" & my wifes icon. I do not see mine.

Thanks for your help. I don't know if I'll get to this today (due to the fact I have 10 month old) and will probably revisit tomorrow night with results.

    thanks again.

If your account is the one that is infected and it is not the administrator account, then just do what I said below in my previous message (run everything in normal boot mode so we can get going).

Just come back when you can! Look for this thread when you come back. It will have slipped down a few pages if it takes you awhile to come back.

As far as not seeing your account in safe mode, you may have just needed to scroll down. Either using the wheel on your mouse (if you have a wheel mouse) or just move the cursor into the user name area until it changes to a hand and then press the down arrow key until you see your name.

It will not appear if you do not have Admin rights so your wife must be an admin. I would bet you are too.
