Access is denied?

i have a friend who's mother board went bad.

I pulled the hard drive and put it into an external hard drive reader, When I try
getting into Doc & setting for his or his wife files I get the following msg:

"M:\Documents and Settings\Jim is not accessible.
Access is denied "

His kids files I can get to.

I'm running on XP SP2.

Would anyone know how I can access the files to get back his data?

If the MS way still gives you probs If you have the user name pass Ubuntu should be able to accesses it no prob in GUI and or terminal
