Access my computer from a different one

Getting ready to leave for a week and wondering. Is there a way to set up my home computer so I can get into it from a different computer and use all the stuff as if I were at my own keyboard at home? Thanks.

with windows XP pro you already have remote desktop. You only need to use the remote desktop client to login to your machine at home. ofcourse there will be some needed configuration on your home network to make this happen. Most notably, you will have to port forward port 3389 to your machine's IP address (preferably static).

 

Thank you, Kodo. This brings up another question for which I need an answer. How do I find out if I am the administrator, or who is the administrator, or who has administrator's priveledges, or how do I become administrator if I'm not? (Several questions, I guess.) My son gave me the computer I'm using; it is used. It already had XP Pro in it. I did no set-up or whatever. I didn't even know the word "administrator" in connection with computers until I got this one. The Remote Desktop you told me about in XP Pro requires the person setting it up to be the administrator or have administrator priveledges. Thanks.

 

One way to check this out is to: Click start, then run, then type in: CMD (press enter)

Then type in the following:

net localgroup administrators

This will list all the users who have admin access on your computer. If your username shows up, then you are good to go.

If you don't know your username, simply type in:

echo %username%

Then type: Exit (to exit)
