Access slow after upgrade

    Here's a big ask - I think.

For many years we have been using an extensive database system originally written in Access 2007. This comprises a front end on several desktops and laptops with the data files on a server running SBS 2003. The suite also integrates with Word to enable the automatic preparation of letters and quotations.

As we have upgraded our Office Software we have continued to run Access 2007 alongside the newer Office products. Occasionally this has proved difficult to install but once working the Access suite runs faultlessly.

On an earlier occasion (perhaps 12 years ago) I did allow a newer version of Access to automatically upgrade the suite but that produced so many errors in the several thousand lines of Module code that it was not worth progressing down that line. So we continued with the updated Office but continued to allow Access 2007 to run the Database suite.

Two years ago ago I up graded my laptop to Windows 7. But continued to run Office XP and as usual Access 2007 - all went well with that. Recently I decided to upgrade to Office 2010. But try as I might I could not get Access 2007 to run alongside 2010 even though Access 2010 was not installed.

So I uninstalled Access 2007, installed Access 2010 and let it automatically upgrade my database front end. I could not believe it but it completed the task with only one insignificant error! And it worked!

So I am now using Access 2010 to run my front end. Others are still using Access 2007 with no difficulty. The data tables on the server are still in Access 2007 format.

Sorry this is going on a bit...

So all is well you might think. Well no - whilst other users on Access 2007 are getting the usual results, my computer with Access 2010 is painfully slow.

I thought it might be because the data tables on the server were still in 2007 format but today I have done a test conversion with no improvement. And on further careful consideration it does appear that the data loads quickly into the forms, but then the hour glass (or the revolving circle) performs for several annoying seconds before returning the screen to the user. So there is something in the converted code (modules) that is causing the hold up.

I have not yet investigated this, I was hoping that someone had already overcome this problem and might save me a lot of work by pointing me in the right direction.

I don't relish attempting to investigating thousands of lines of code to find what is holding things up.

We want to upgrade all users to Office 2010, but unless we can get the database up to speed it would be counter productive. We use it constantly.

    Any assistance will be appreciated.

In the previous post I incorrectly said that the version of Access used initially was Access 2007.

This is incorrect - It was actually Access 97. The original suite was completed in 1998.
