I need help with my father’s computer. Whenever he gets another problem (i.e. virus, spyware, adware, hijacker..etc), he calls on me to come over and fix it. I am don’t mind helping him and I am fairly capable of fixing quite a bit on the computer, however he has strayed from my advice on using Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. He has returned back to MS Internet Explorer. At least he’s now using Incredimail instead of Outlook Express (at least I think it’s better, let me know). He is now very astute about his responsibilities on finding and eliminating viruses/spyware/adware (basically because I beat it into his head). He does this by keeping up to date on his scans with spybot, spysweeper, MS anti-spyware, ad-aware 6.0, and avg virus scan.

I have been working on his computer for the last couple of hours and have eliminated several viruses and numerous spyware/adware from his computer, but I’m still lost as to why his computer is doing what it’s doing.
I have tried running Spysweeper and Tune Up Utilities 2006 but both programs have run into an access violation error message that freezes the programs.
    They read as:

    Tune up Utilities
“Access Violation at Address 00E156D6. Read of Address 362C323C.”

    Spysweeper
“Access Violation at Address 00B456D6. Read of Address 362C323C.”

Also, I have tried to run Ewido, but it also freezes up but pops a encountered a problem message, do you want to report it to Microsoft?

All three programs display errors (viruses/spyware) before freezing up.

My father also told me that Taskmgr is acting funny. When I three fingered saluted the computer, it displayed the taskmgr window, but without the header and the tabs (processes, applications, etc.). This presented a problem in trying to close it, as well as browsing through it. The only way that I can close it is either logoff/restart or to end the process tree of taskmgr, both ways work.

I have followed the forums for a while now and have gotten a few answers and downloads over the years, I had never asked for help...until now.

    HELP...haha
    Thanks,
    Hawaiiankid

    Welcome to MGs.

Read step 7 again! No logs should be posted in line like you did with HijackThis. Why did you post it inline and attach the others.

ad-aware 6.0 is out of date. If you are still using that, you have not followed the steps in the READ ME properly. You must click on all links and make sure you have the versions in our links and then get all associated updates. Go back and verify that you have the correct versions of other tools. If you are out of date on one, you could be on others. For example Spybot S&D is on version 1.4. What do you have?
