I can't believe I did this. I clicked on cancel but Nero Burning uninstalled anyway.
Naturally CD and DVD plus USB are not working. I desperately need Nero back because I am having serious problems with Microsoft WORD 2002 and feel the only way to recover WORD is to re-install it, which of course I can't without Nero.

Please, please advise me. How can I get it back? Your help would be very much appreciated.
My PC is Windows XP 2002, Medion 6 years old. I think Nero Burning was 5, or something like that.

I know I have been awake for 20 hours and I should be in bed BUT what is the connection Nero to Word ???

 sorry, as a Gemini I often make a mess of the way I want to say something.
The only connection is I need to sort WORD out. Uninstall it, then reinstall it.
For that I need Nero Burning, erm don't I?
I have a Medion recovery disc and Microsoft Work Suite 2002. I can't use either disc without my CD RW or my DVD (which Microsoft will only work through).
That's the reason I need to find a way of recovering Nero, as I can't afford the £49 for a new one (even if I could load it).

Does that make any sense to anyone?
Sorry to be a pain, but you'll see I am not clever or knowledgable about certain parts of my PC. Only what I've learned from TimW and others.

So if someone can help me you'll be my hero forever.
    Thankyou, Mad-Friend.

So you're saying you don't have a CD/DVD writer on your system to back up information to removable discs yet you have Nero which is used exactly for that. I'm quite confused here.:)

    :eek::eek::eek:
I've just proved how little I know.
augiedoggie, please accept my sincerest apologies for the muddle I made of things.
I have DVD and CD RW plus 2 USB ports (the old type).
But because I had accidentally uninstalled Nero Burning I found I couldn't use them. However I have found I can open the Microsoft Works Suite 2002.
I have just attempted to detect and repair WORD. Unfortunately the same malfunctions still exist. Also, these errors appeared while trying to run Detect and Repair: Error 1931 Setup cannot find update file C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE because it is protected by Windows, and, This file is in use by another application or user C:\Documents and settings\....Normal.dot

WORD is crashing. And when I click behind a word to continue a sentence it highlights the word, or full paragraph in black and will delete it unless I click somewhere else. This isn't just in word, it is happening while I am typing this and on emails.

I will rephrase my question. Can I uninstall WORD and re-install it with the Microsoft Works Suite 202 DVD rom without Nero?

Please accept my apologies again for my clumsy inept way of trying to explain.

Your CD/DVD drive runs based on drivers, not software. Windows should still have your optical drive drivers installed. Nero is just software. One thing you can try is going to your Device Manager (right click My Computer, go to Properties, the Device Manager is a button in one of those tabs, I forget which one), and expand the CD/DVD drive... right click on it, go to Update driver, and see if Windows will help you get a driver installed for it.

Yes, you can install word without Nero. BTW, don't be sorry.;)

No. If you have an MS Office disk, that's all you need. Nero has nothing to do with Word/Office or with the basic functionality of the CD/DVD drive. Nero is simply a program for burning DVDs/CDs. It is not required to burn discs, it just makes it easier and has lots of features. Windows XP has CD burning built in and that works fine for basic data burning needs. If the functionality of your CD/DVD drive has been messed up somehow, Nero isn't going to have any effect on that. If the drive is not reading CDs and DVDs correctly (or doesn't read at all) try uninstalling the drive from the device manager and restart the PC. The drive should work after Windows loads up again.
Absolutely. I'll say it again: Nero is an optional program for burning CDs/DVDs and has absolutely nothing to do with installing any software.

    :) Thankyou so much guys,
I am taking on board everything you say. This has been a big learning curve for me.

CD RW + DVD + USB 1 are not working properly. I can't access files from memory pen, or discs. Discs (with the exception of MS Office disc) will not load. So I will take your advice and let you know what happens.
Thankyou augiedoggie, mcsmc and dlb for all your help.

Just one last question: when I uninstall WORD will I lose all my WORD files?
And is there any do's and don'ts of uninstalling WORD then re-installing it? I've never done it before and don't want to make a mess of it.

Ya, you may have more issues than just Word. I would definitely backup your current Word files elsewhere on your HDD. There are some free apps in the MG front page for backups that you may find useful. I never trust a HDD with important documents, if you must, e-mail them to yourself and leave them on the server until you figure this out.

WORD is just a program... it's the same as Nero in that respect. Any files you created using Word (documents) won't be lost if you uninstall Word.

To uninstall Word, simply go to your Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, find Word, and click Uninstall on it. Word may NOT be listed individually... it may be listed as MS Office or whatever.

To reinstall it, simply insert the Office disk and install from the disk. :)

You could also boot in Safe Mode, search for and delete the Normal.dot file. Word will recreate it the next time that it is ran. Corruption of this file is one of the most frequent of Word problems. :)

    :(
I think you were right, augiedoggie. I definately have more issues than WORD.

Okay WORD is no more. Uninstalled it, ran MS Works Suite DVD rom so I could reinstall WORD and the disc wouldn't open. :( I previously have files backed up on disc prior to malfunctions.)

One thing I have found. The highlighting of words/paragraphs is still ongoing, even without WORD.

I followed your advice dlb: uninstalled the disc drive from Device Manager. PC automatically closed and restarted. Good news is it found new Hardware ST 38........ but none of the discs still won't open and MS DVD rom won't. I even tried the recovery disc that came with Medion. IT won't open either.
No documents will open in my computer, but I think that's because WORD has been uninstalled.

I followed your suggestion mcsmc, clicked on update Driver. Windows came back with couldn't find any better drivers.

I don't know what to do next. I'm trying to be positive but I would like WORD back. I use it more than anything else.

    Please please help.
Thankyou everyone for taking the time to read and try to help me I really appreciate it.

    Can you do this:

Go to start / run / type "regedit" without quotes...when the registry opens expand your way down to this:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>
    SYSTEM>
    CurrentControlSet>
    Services>
    Cdrom>

Tell us ( or attach a screen shot - Taking Screenshots) of the values in the right pane.

    Hello TimW,
I managed to get a screenshot after following your instructions. But tried twice to attach it. Both times it failed. It is too big. I've no idea how to make it smaller so it will upload. Sorry.

    I'll keep on trying.

    Thankyou TimW.
You don't know who I am. I don't know who you are. Yet you and your fellow collegues go out of your way to help me. A thankyou seems so inadequate.
    I'm humbled.

While you're working through your Word issues, you can download and install OpenOffice from http://www.openoffice.org . It is software like Word, only free, and you can use it to manage your documents for the time being. Also, since it's a download instead of a disk, you shouldn't have any issues installing it. :)

I use Irfanview (free) often to take a screenshot and can crop and resize the pic. http://www.majorgeeks.com/IrfanView_d4253.html

    1. Hit PrtScreen key on you keyboard.

    2. Now open Irfanview, click on the Edit tab, then select "paste". Your screenshot will open. More often than not, you will find that you only need a small part of everything that was copied when you hit the Prt Scr, so now you need to crop the picture.

    3. Drag your mouse over the part you wish to crop and you will see an outline form. Click on Edit tab, then select "crop" selection.

Now you have the screenshot with the information that you need at the right size.

    4. Click on File tab, then select "save as" and save to your PC.

Upload to your screenshot album ready for copying and pasting into your message.

PS: If you find the image still too large to paste into your message, simply change the "save as type" in Irfanview to "jpeg", "jpg"

    This works for me.

Thankyou TimW for your help. I think I may have solved the screenshot size issue.
I hope this works, if not I'll try the irfanview.

    :) Thankyou so much, oma,
your instructions were brill. Sorry for making a right pig's ear of my previous attempts. But I think I have cracked this.

And thankyou TimW for not running screaming from the room. Hope this helps.

My family are staying for a week on holiday so posts and replys may be a little slow in coming. Please stick with me. I'll still be here.
    Bless you all. x

Yes, you definitely cracked this. :) No need to apologize. ;) Hopefully, someone else will chime in and help you fix the Nero problem, as I'm still a newbie.

    Hello TimW,
has the screenshot helped, shown up any problems?
CD-ROM: it will play music on Windows Media Player now that I have updated it, but I cannot access the discs for files. No CDs with information stored on them will open. I cannot access files written on my memory stick either. Please can you help fix this?

Good news: I have been able to re-install Word.
Strangely, some niggling faults remain, corrupt files and some files are now showing notepad icons, but they open okay in Word and I can use Word.

The only other thing is the way Control Panel and C:\ Drive displays themselves. I used to have standard access options, now I have this when I open Control Panel. I will attach screenshot to show you.

    Hi TimW,
    hope I've done this right.
While these are not major problems unlike the CD-Rom DVD-Rom and Drives, I would still like to return them to their normal display settings, if that's possible, please.
Thankyou, hope to hear from you soon.
    Trish.
