I recently did a fresh install of XP SP3 on an Acer Aspire 4710z. I installed all the XP drivers from the Acer site (I slipstreamed the SATA driver into the original disk with nLite, but installed the others later), and most are working fine. However:
    - I can't connect get a wireless signal (I haven't tried with a cable). There is no wireless shown in Network Connections
    - In Device Manager there is a yellow question mark next to Non-Plug and Play Drivers>Other devices>Network Controller
    - When I installed (and re-installed) the Wireless Broadcom, Atheros and Intel drivers, it said there was no 'corresponding card' inserted.

The internet was working fine before reformatting, and it previously also had XP SP3, but I think the shop put that on so I don't know how it was done.

I have tried re-installing the wireless, chipset and storage drivers, and searching online for a network controller driver, with no luck.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

I just get the following when I click those links in Comodo Dragon:

    This webpage is not available.

The webpage at ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_4710/driver might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

    More information on this error
Below is the original error message

    Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error.

And 'No such file or directory' in Firefox.

Anyway, I went onto the site myself:
    http://www.acer.co.uk/acer/service....tx1g.c2att92=122&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2980211862

And re-downloaded it. I went to the DrvInst folder as there was no .exe file in the main folder or in the WinXP folder, and installed it from that (which meant uninstalling the old one. It said I had done it successfully, but nothing changed. After rebooting, the Found New Hardware Wizard opened automatically to help me find software for Ethernet Controller. It said it couldn't find anything on my computer, and obviously couldn't go online. I directed it to look in the Lan driver folder that I had just downloaded and it said it successfully installed a driver. On reboot, no Wizard opened, but all else is the same:

    - there is still a yellow ? next to the Network Controller
    - the Local Area Connection 2 (in Network Connections) says 'Network cable unplugged', though the 1394 is connected.
    - the wireless button doesn't light up as it did before the reformatting and pressing it has no effect (but oddly, the Bluetooth light does come on, even though I didn't install the BT driver)

    Any more ideas?

    Thanks

Sorry, how's this? I've attached the original htm (zipped) and a plain text file.

I am catching a flight about 16 hours from now and I can't take the problem computer with me, so a quick reply would be much appreciated. (I'm going out now though and will be back in a couple hours.)

    Cheers.

As there was no reply in time, I ended up going to a shop. They said all my drivers were right for that model of computer, but for some reason my network adapter was a Dell one, not Acer, so the usual drivers wouldn't work. They installed the Dell driver and it was fine after that.

Any idea why there might be a Dell adapter in an Acer computer?

No idea, but i would suggest, go into device manager, d click network adapter, driver, and write down the driver version just for future reference. ed
