acer aspire 3000 will not read disk

Hello,
My friend's laptop ended up getting messed up somehow so he asked me to clear everything off of it and re install the os. So like the last time I had to do it he gave me a system recovery disc and a few other disc's wich were un needed. While i thought this was going to be a simple task it turned out not to be. The problem with his computer is that windows pops up saying that windows did not start succesfully and a recent hardware or software change might have caused this. Windows will no longer boot in normal mode and it will only boot in safe mode. I have searched his computer for any spyware viruses ect with no virus or spyware showing up. So i thought of dissabeling the floppy drive in cmos but i rememberd that their was none and i tried re arranging the boot order but i have had no luck also i have tried choosing what to boot from and it still wont read the cd. This is starting to become more of a problem then once thought. Please help.
