    Hi there,

My wife's fitness instructor had this machine that has not been able to run Windows updates since July 2013.

There were a few things out of date with it and due to a homepage being reset, I was suspicious of malware on there, although I don't think it's badly infected?

Gone through the steps and the logs are attached.

    Thanks.

Re run Hitman and have it remove Potential Unwanted Programs.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

What happens when you try? Any error messages? (Although this part is topic for the software forum I do believe)

The trial version of Hitman Pro had expired, so was unable to remove anything. Sorry, it must have been installed on here before. :yum

The registry fixME.reg was run successfully. A successful message was returned saying they had been added to the registry.

My bad. I should have said "Had". The Windows Update Service was disabled. I enabled that, and then there was a quirk whereby I had to:

    • Right click on Taskbar
    • Select properties
    • Click on customize in Notification Area
    • Select "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar"

Then windows updates worked once again.

    :)

Re run Hitman again and attach log.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :reg
    [-HKLM\SOFTWARE\DataMngr]
    [-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Conduit]
    [-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2406}]
    [-HKU\S-1-5-21-245845560-3099408193-2875143761-1001\Software\Datamngr]

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now run Hitman again, see if that's done it.

Just the one entry left now.

I had ran OTM and then Hitman Pro twice (I didn't think OTM had run properly the first time).

    Log files attached.

    Thanks again...

    Hitman still shows:

    It needs removing.

    Hello,

Is there any other way I could try other than paying for the Hitman Pro subscription?

The regfix doesn't work no matter how many times it has been run, and when OTM runs it always reports that that reg key can't be found.

    :(:yum:confused

You confident in going into the Windows Registry and deleting the key yourself?

Yes, I've done similar before when Windows 7 has moved my profile to backup and you get the User Profile could not be loaded message.

I don't know what caused it but the solution from Microsoft was to boot Windows into administrator account and then backup and edit the registry manually.

Are there any special steps, or is it just navigating to that key and deleting it?

    Cheers...

    :-D Indeed. That's nice!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
