I bought a laptop in Jan. this year with XP pro sp2 and have been getting this error in my event viewer:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: ACPIEC
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1
    Date: 9/1/2007
    Time: 7:52:01 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: DANSMOBILE
    Description:
\Device\ACPIEC: The embedded controller (EC) hardware didn't respond within the timeout period. This may indicate an error in the EC hardware or firmware, or possibly a poorly designed BIOS which accesses the EC in an unsafe manner. The EC driver will retry the failed transaction if possible.

I contacted support and they told me to run some updates from their site, and also restore default bios, which didn't help. On the third conversation tech support said this was a "serious" error and transfered me to someone else. This person told me, after about 20 minutes, that since this was only in my event viewer that I should not worry and just keep an eye on it.

I have Googled it but don't understand what I read. If someone can give me advice regarding the error or whether the tech guy is correct in saying to not worry I would appreciate it.

I would like to get this figured out before the warranty expires.

    Thanks Dan

    Hi Tunered,
Thanks for the link. I think I saw this a couple of weeks ago and checked the fan and installed speed fan to check the cpu temp. Everything seemed normal ( at least to me), the cpu was about 40c on average and the laptop fan kicks on around 50c. Also I have a chill pad I use regularly.

The error occurs randomly, sometimes shortly after startup to sometimes at shutdown. This lead me away from excessive heat as a cause.

I installed Everest today and I get similar readings, although it has raised one question. Everest and Belarc show the date of my bios as 9-21-2006 and the bios update on the manufacturers site I installed is dated 06-06-2006. Might this cause problems?
