Activate windows

Something strange is going on with my new desktop PC, i have had the machine about 3 months now and it came pre-installed with Vista home premium and just today my screen went black with just the icons showing and a pop up asking me to activate windows now.
when i click the pop up it tells me to "activate windows now" and then "type in a new number"

i have lost all wallpapers/screensavers/restore points and windows settings.

i can not believe this is malware as i have opened nothing and downloaded nothing?

Any ideas please.

I have re-entered my key and it has "activate successful" showing .
i rebooted but still have lost restore points and all the rest (BLOODY MICROSOFT) i have sent a :crap e mail so if i wait a week/month i may get a reply.
