"Activating" a second hard drive

    Hello,

    I recently purchased a Maxtor 80gb drive to accompany my other 80gb hard drive. I need the space.

    My settings on the new hard drive said that no jumper was needed for a slave drive setting. I found this unusual but I assume that it's right.

    I installed the second hard drive and no problems there, bar a dodgy screw that was annoying my head. Got it sorted anyway.

    I had to switch over the IDE cables after reading on Maxtor's site that BLACK = Master and Grey = Slave. Silly me.

    I'm basically looking for a way to "activate" the second hard drive. I'd heard Maxblast? mentioned before, but my floppy drive seems to be messing me around (at the moment) so I'm not getting any joy out of that.

    I can follow pretty basic instructions, I just have no idea how to go around activating one. I've backed up all important documents just incase and would appreciate if someone give me a hand in getting it up and running.

    Both hard drives are detected in the 'hardware' section of the CP, so it's there, just a matter of getting it started. I assume I have to format it? Again, I'm not sure.

    This is the drive in question;
    HERE :)

    I'm running Windows XP Pro, as well.

    Thanks for any help. :)

    Click on Start->Run and type in "diskmgmt.msc"

    This will bring up a list of all drives on your computer...

    On the bottom half of the screen, to the right of the new drive, there will be about 75 Gb of unpartitioned space. You'll want to right click on it and select "Format". Don't worry, you can't format the drive that has Windows installed on it, so if you've only got two, then you can't mess it up. From there it should be fairly self explanatory.

    Got it sorted via your method.

    Thanks very much. :)
