    hello everyone!

i think i'm having trouble with one of my active x controls, or possibly javascript. i am trying to not have to pay a big amount of $$ to have a specialist come look at my computer. :\

certain features on my windows xp do not work, as well as aol/internet explorer. i believe that it is the same problem affecting all of them. for example, if i try to click on a java link in internet explorer/aol, nothing happens. and the java scripting doesn't show up on the webpage in ie/aol. they do show up perfectly normal in netscape.

on the actual windows xp itself, i will try to explain my problems as best i can. certain features of software (usually causing the whole program itself to be totally useless) do not work. here are a few specific instances/problems:

**1) my aol program recommended me to download the security center. i did, but couldn't use it. all that would open is the program window, but it would be blank. nothing would come up. so, had to erase the program of course. (aol computer check-up also doesn't work, just comes up as a blank screen)
**2) i downloaded pc tools anti-virus software. i bought it, but then it said my trial had run out. no problem, i could register it with the license #. only problem is, the program itself won't open, only a dialog box saying i need to activate my existing license, or purchase the program. i can't click the box that says "activate"...nothing happens when i click it.

is this making sense to any of you?? i regret that i sound like i have no idea what i'm talking about (which, really, i don't). i really need help though, please. if any of you can email me... htxmama328@aol.com, or you can message me through this. thank you very much. i can further describe my problem if you ask me to.

(I'm cross-posting this thread on different boards at this website, b/c I am not sure which topic it really fits under. Sorry if that isn't allowed...I'm new to this).

Make sure you dont have any old verisons of java
Go to Start>Control Panel>Add and Remove Programs
If you find anything with java in it or JS2E uninstall it.
Then run CCleaner, download link here

now download the latest version of Sun Java
Click here to download the latest version

tell me if this works for you

No need to reboot, after you install just close all your browsers and then open them again.

    ----

#2 http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/kaybee328/javalink1.jpg ---- that is what comes up in the browser bar @ the bottom of the screen, when i try to click a java link in IE6/aol. the link doesnt open, but thats what the command is trying to do

i do hate aol browser!! :( thats why i use netscape most of the time. i do need windows to function though! i can do w/o aol or IE6! i am going to get a new laptop later this year but for now this stupid desktop has to work :(

here is a question...do you think it could be related to this??

a couple yrs ago, my mother (whom this used to belong to) had someone come to her house from the best buy near our house, an independent service rep. he got rid of viruses, spyware, etc., and installed (for free, and bootleg i know) windows xp professional. we only had windows xp home before that. when computer starts up, you have to choose between home/professional. professional DOES not work. i think its b/c its bootleg, and it stopped working. so you have to make sure to select the HOME operating prog when cpu starts, or it will restart itself in about 5 secs (it tries to open PROFESSIONAL xp by default). blah.. could it have anything to do w/ this?? how can i remove the windows xp prof.?? i am sure it would free up a ton of diskspace. did that make sense??

Havem you checked your Internet Security Settings on your browsers? if they are set to High then Java is automatically disabled.

  30. kaybee328

    kaybee328 Private E-2

yes ive checked/changed those in the past. would that cause windows itself to not run programs correctly?? (i guess the ones that are affected are the ones req. internet access)

  31. Bladesofhalo

    Bladesofhalo MajorGeek

Setting the settings to high disables most Active X scripting/java
try setting the Secuirty settings to default, then restart your browser and see if java works. If not, then your suggestion of rebooting your pc might help, although I never had to reboot my pc after installing java.

I had Viewpoint Media Player, and two versions of WildTangent. The first uninstallation of WildTangent told me to reboot afterwards (I didn't). The 2nd WT wouldn't let me uninstall it (nothing happened when I clicked Remove).

here are 3 of the trojans that came up when using avast last night. I tried clicking "Move to Chest" when they came up but an error message came. Then the computer froze LOL.

    http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/kaybee328/th_untitled2.jpg

then the error msg from "move to chest" (when i tried to click it on the virus screen):

    http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/kaybee328/th_untitled.jpg

god knows how many others are on my computer...just let me know what to do when this screen pops up when it finds one (or how to fix the move to chest option) and i can go on my way cleaning them out. im sure those are major parts of the problem. thanks!!!!!

The Trojans you are getting are false positives. They are not really trojans, they are files for Outpost Firewall. No need to worry. But just to be on the safe side, run this online scan in Safe Mode

    www.activescan.com

Did you remove them with the program you downloaded, Your Uninstaller! 2006
So how are things with the Sun java coming along?

  35. kaybee328

    kaybee328 Private E-2

So, the trojans that came up in "avast!", i don't need to do anything about? what do i do when REAL ones come up...how will i be able to tell they are real? do you know how i can fix the "move to chest" function? i have removed a whole bunch of bad stuff from the computer, but the messed up functions still aren't working on AOL/windows xp. That's okay though... I just want my computer to BE FASTER...I do wish it would clear up the java problem (if that even is what's wrong w/ it). I'm running Spybot now. I have found many instances of Viewpoint and WildTangent on my computer. I cant use that Active Scan website for some reason.

just uninstall them from your pc using the prog I gave you, as for the java prob it seems I ran out of solutions. i see you did a malware thread with Chaslang, follow his instructions and maybe that will help.
