    hi,

i origionaly posted this in the software section, i thought i would post it here with a question,

can an activeX be classed as 'dangerous' even though some 'real' sites use one,
eg. the one in this link

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=158139

(the memory search was just a bit of background)

    thanks for any info

Similar to other software, active-x controls can be either good or bad. And scanners will sometimes detect them and mark them as such. It does not always mean they are really bad. It just means they could be used for malicious purposes and that you need to be aware of them. Remote access software like WinVNC and packet processing programs like WinPCAP are detected by many programs as being malware when they are not. They are valid programs. The question is really whether the user has installed and uses them. If not, they could have been put there by a malicious person or piece of software. They same is true for many active-x controls that are used for performing scanning functions like you mentioned. In most cases, if you installed the controls yourself and from a trusted website and you know what they are and how they are used then they should be okay. However, that does not mean that scanning tools will not detect them as bad. Many people will remove active-x controls like this site due to the fact that they could be problems and also because removing them will not cause problems for your OS. If you again access the site responsible for the active-x control, it will just have to download the control again.

In short: NetSource101 is used by work4sure and is detected by many scanners as a problem. See: http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453074892

    thanks chaslang,

as its in spywareblasters database i can't use it anyway, unless i allow it,

i can see how it would cause a bit of a headache in certain cases, if spywareblaster was installed
