I have a trojan on my computer and of course, the day after it appeared, my virus scan needed renewed. The trojan had disabled my cookies, and I had been unable to sign in to any of the sites that required user name/password. (Hence my surprise when I was able to sign in here! - though, still no where else).

I purchases the Webroot SpySweeper, but in order to install it, it says I need to uninstall my Ad-Aware. I tried. I received these errors:

    Could not open INSTALL.LOG file.

Error 1722: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program ru as part of the set up did not finish as expected. Contact your support personal or package vendor.

    Fatal error during installation.

I tried to reinstall the Ad-Aware, but still no luck.

I'm frustrated in trying to figure this out, any ideas?? :confused

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Have you tried Windows Installer Cleanup?

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Note:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Here are the files, sorry but I was not able to run them until tonight. Thank you for your help, as so far, I seem to have gotten rid of the Malware. I'll attach the last file in my next post.

I haven't tried to reinstall the TrendMicro AntiVirus again yet, but will let you know if the problemswith the Ad-Aware removal still exists.

    Thank you for your help!!

The scans removed a lot of malware.....could you tell me what this is:
    C:\s5ag

You need to use add/remove programs and uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    Then reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Are you still having problems? What exactly are the issues. :)

I have no idea what the C:\s5ag is. I tried to look into it, but it's not anything I recognize. Think it's something that should not be there?

The good part is, it seems like all my other issues are resolved :celebrate
and for that, I am grateful!!!

I uninstalled the programs you said, and installed the new one, installed my virusscan and things seem to be back to normal.

If you don't know what it is...delete it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
