I keep getting this pop up window on my computer that is driving me crazy because I can't seem to get rid of it.
Everyday I get home from work and there is this pop-up window. The address is www.adshooter.com/pop_shooter/ads/ad12.html - micorsoft internet explorer. The window is grey, nothing in it. At the same time, my norton antivirus tells me there has been an attempt to hack into my computer. I'm figuring the two are correlated.
I run windows ME, have norton antivirus that is scheduled to run live update daily, as well as perform scan daily, I downloaded ad-aware 6.0 from your site. I'm mystified, stupified and frustrated!!! Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this? Oh, and a few weeks back I got hooked into something called ILookup that kept hijacking my internet explorer. Finally got rid of that and the nasty toolbar it kept installing...could this be some residual? Any ideas?

    Grateful,

Did you run ad-aware and delete what it found and did you update it before running it?

Kinda.....I just downloaded ad-aware a few days ago when i first started having this problem (which is how I found myself at majorgeek, yeah google!). I downloaded ad-aware, ran it the first time, had something like 264 objects removed, had some problems, had to reinstall everything it quarantined, tried again, it removed the same 264 objects, quarantined those. Things seemed okay until the next day...the ad shooter pops up again. I run ad-aware again, it finds one or two objects, quarantine them and now its a daily routine. I've scanned a total of 4 times in the last 3 days. Seems this ad shooter thing keeps finding a way in (?) . there is a website at www.adshooter.com that says something about click here to uninstall but I'm terrified its just going to bung things up more!!! I haven't scanned ad aware yet today so I'll run that after this post and see what happens....i'm guessing it is going to find one object...again..which I will quarantine...again and so on and so on and so on. I am at a complete loss?!?!

Okay, finished posting to you, did an ad-aware scan, it found one object which I quarantined, thought I'd do an update just to see, downloaded some updates (what a dif 3 days makes!), ran another scan, now it has found 12 objects so I'll quarantine those and see what happens........will advise tomorrow if the problem persists. question? when I quarantine, and then check the log, it states vendor, type, catagory and object....what the bees knees are those? And I notice under vendor that a couple say i-lookup so I obviously have not gotten rid of that pesky thing. Teach me for surfing the net somewhere I shouldn't be!

What a difference 12 hours makes, I just noticed another update was released and its not posted on their website yet :)

Vendor is who makes the program or cookie.

Type refers to whether its a folder, files, registry entries, etc. Sort of how it gets run your system and where it goes.

Category describes what type of program it falls under, though the breakdown is not very good from there.

Object is where it is on your PC, the path to the file or whatever.

As you noticed, you dont need to understand all of this to recognize obvious spyware. I hae run Ad-Aware hundreds of times an many machines and just deleted everything it finds and am yet to be burned.

    Good night!

Hey, just so I know ...

Okay, just so I know, when we use "updates" for Ad-Aware, is this nothing more than clicking the "Update" button within the program, or are we talking about newer versions?

    Thanks,

Re: Hey, just so I know ...

"Updates" refers to within the program, which are frequent, they update the program to recognize new threats, exactly like an antivirus program updates itself.

The main program is updated about once or twice a year, tops.

Okay, home from work and still have norton showing me somebody tried to hack in and still have the ad shopper pop up window! Updated ad-aware last night, ran a scan, quarantined some objects, things looked good, went to bed with computer on and working, got up this am, no computer, had to reboot, wouldn't open internet, reboot again, got internet, ran norton antivirus, said all things good, left for work, home and ad shopper sitting on the screen with norton flashing angry red exclamation point!!! HELP!

Ill need some backup from people here, I am not really familiar with ME. Does it have a messenger service built in, for example. Anyone?
