adapters cannot connect

W2k clean install.
2 NICs - on board and PCI
neither can connect
both are in device mgr as OK
if I plug a cable into either it says the cable is connected.
ipconfig shows 0 for ip address and disconnected for both (no DHCP) even when it says cable is connected in the tray icon
connection works when plugged into another computer.

where is the switch and why didn't it default to on after the clean install??????????

Are you using DHCP? If so, what error does it give you when you try to release or renew an IP. If you look at the adapter properties for either NIC is tcp/ip installed? What type of device are you connecting to; a modem, a router, a modem that routes? Have you tried assigning a static settings?

 

ipconfig shows adapter connected and returns a 0.0.0.0 address not a 169 address so it must be connecting to the router but not getting an IP address.

it says DHCP isn't running but another computer connects fine on the same cable - therefore DHCP must be running on the router and assigning addresses, so why not to the NICs on this computer???
