How necessary is the layer approach to spyware security...ie., having SpyWare Guard, having SpyBlaster, having Spybot-S&D along w/ AdAware, given the fact that they drain resources?

Are these 4 programs a drain fm Ram memory or Systems Resources?

personally, id only have spyblaster running resident (permenantly) and check over with spybot OR adaware on a regular basis.

Oh yes and a bit more protection, SpySites will block suspicious areas from IE into the restricted zone to prevent spyware being loaded onto your computer. whats better is you only need to run it once :)

Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Spyware Blaster only run when you run them: they aren't background programs, and you usually only run them when you're running nothing else, anyway. The problem of resources-drain doesn't arise at all with these programs.

SpywareGuard is a real-time background program. It prevents the installation of new spyware of a broad range of types. It's an additional layer, and there IS a resource question there, but I've never seen complaints that the Guard is a resource hog.

I update and run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Spyware Blaster once a week or so, when I'm doing the weekly scan and defrag routine (taking out the garbage). I don't think the additional layer of real-time protection is so important that I want to use everyday resources for it.

Your choice, but for the other three, there's no problem.

Just so he doesn't misunderstand, goldfish, I want to add that Spyware Blaster checks and blocks registry keys, and once it has blocked them, it quits. It writes protection to the reg. It does nothing more until the next time you run it, and even then, if it doesn't find any new registry keys to block, it does nothing. That's why the first time it runs, it takes a minute or two, and every run after the first one only takes about two seconds.

It is "permanent," but it's not really "running resident."

    OK, goldfish?
