Add Group Policy Editor 1.0. I see it is for 7. Do we know, before I try, if it will work on 8 (core)?
I am stuck with this 8 (core) on a new laptop, and it does not have Group Editor, meaning 90% of the fixes to disable the stuff MS mandates cannot easily be addressed.
Some I have done via registry, some just by disabling other portions I don't need.
    Thanks.

    Hi

I take it from your text that you mean Windows 8 when you say "8 Core"? if Group Policy Editor 1.0 is a 3rd party app then why use this over gpedit.msc?
You need to be a bit plain when describing things as not everyone will know your tech slang....

But Group Policy is still in Windows 8 and as far as I know its no different to XP > 7 versions and options but may depend on your version of Windows 8 as I have Pro (in checking the options)

What options via gpedit can you not access in 8 that you could in 7?

    Okay.
If you don't have 8, you will get caught like I did. I had read that MS did away with "home", but what they really did was eliminate the name.
Apparently, the official MS terminology for 8 home is 8 core.
    There is no group edit.
There is a whole pile of other stuff not there, also.
One of the tricks to fix this mess of an OS is lockscreen delete.
    Have to use Group Edit.
    Not there to use.
There are other things, like the run button, that you have to figure out on your own, as the online instructions count on gpedit.
"Add Group Policy Editor 1.0" for 7 is needed for non-pro versions.
    Also needed for 8 non-pro.
And, it doesn't work. Tried it.
There is no tutorial I have been able to find, or anything on what options I am supposed to have as it loads or launches.

There are files, like my application data under "users" that I cannot access.

I am trying to configure this new unit to work like what I have been used to for 20 years or so.
After seeing how bad 8 really is, I am quite reluctant to spend any more money with them for a Pro upgrade.

I am not sure what slang I am using.
8 core is official MS terminology in-house. Outside of house, 8 core is just 8.
    7 is 7.
    MS is MicroSoft.
"Add Group Policy Editor 1.0" is right here on this website:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Add_Group_Policy_Editor_d7032.html

I have found a bunch of fixes to work around this mess, but most require gpedit.msc, which 8 (core, home, base, stripped version....) does not have.

I had tried that first. Apparently, there is some permission issue hidden somewhere. It would not launch.
I had both the enable and disable on my desktop. I fixed mine by removing the need for passwords. Not exactly sure, but most likely I missed something vital that I am not familiar with.
If this was XP, I'd dive right in to the registry, but the limitations on 8 scare me. I need to become a tad more familiar with it.

Some of the stuff I have read indicates quite a few things specifically written for 7 will work on 8, while a few will not.
Unless I'm missing something, this program "Add Group Policy Editor 1.0" will not work in 8.

Right click and run it as administrator, maybe?

  7. ScaleCraft

    ScaleCraft Private E-2

Tried that. This computer is doing everything it can to keep me out. I intend to overcome.
For instance, the entire layout of "my computer" files is different than I am used to. Finally scrolled way down to "users", found what I normally would have found under "Documents and Settings", users.
    How odd.
I tried to open application data....access denied.
    Administrator, and access denied?
Finally got permissions reset to "allow", after it warning me that it could not or would not allow that, they are all "allow", and access is still denied.

I wish there was some tutorial on the "Add Group Policy Editor 1.0" so I knew if I was launching of even trying to access it correctly.

Give it 2 or 3 more months, we'll have a lot more hacks or programs to fix this broken OS.

You keep calling it a broken os.

I don't think the issues you are having are OS related as much as how you have your account setup.

Open regedit and do it manually per my reg files. Right click them and open with notepad.

  9. ScaleCraft

    ScaleCraft Private E-2

Okay, let me elaborate on "broken".
I have a handful of photos saved. All but one are screenshots (snipping), of what this thing keeps telling me. Even though I have set all permissions, it says I have no access, access if forbidden, can't go there.
When I open photos, suddenly we are back where I was a week ago, full screen, no "x" to close them (on screen shots, there is an "x' as part of the screenshot, does nothing).
Finally figured out part of the OS is shifting it into metro, I have to remember to hit the flag key to drop out, then for a few moments the charms on the right side are back.
I need to be able to have access to the stuff Redmond is keeping me out of.
I know how to do this in XP. I go into registry on 8, not sure I am going to fix or break it. I have saved the reg files as part of CCleaner, so I have a revert point.
I have done that on this XP box, copied out the reg files, will go open the 8 box and change dword:00000001.
On 8 (core), there doesn't seem to be any way to set up the account any differently. I have tried all the stuff I think I remember, but never ran into this with XP. Ever.
I could put up a screen shot of what it is telling me, but I will have to go log in from the 8 box.
I want to disable skydrive. No need for it. Don't want it to keep asking me.
I really want to eliminate MS Store. Just because I'm getting really pi....upset with the way they keep trying to get me to go there.
    I bypassed the MS Account.

On XP, I was one of those snagged in the famous MS renaming WGA as a "critical update", which overrode settings, downloaded and rebooted.
No way was that going to happen again.
You can't shut off the updates....they keep trying. I finally went into services, update properties, and disabled the profile, which I can un-do should I need to update.
Guess what I cannot do with 8 (core)?
Which is why BI was looking for a gpedit option for 8 (core).

What do you think should be changed in the way I have my account set up?
I have manually set permissions, yet it tells me I don't have permission.
I have never run into this before.

Bad thing is, I cannot get XP drivers for this Toshiba laptop. That was going to be my fall back option.

If you are having permissions issues viewing pictures then you have screwed up permissions from when you copied your data over. The problem with non pro 8 is that you cannot fix those permissions. Windows 8 didn't cause the issue though. A quick way to reset file permissions is to drop them onto a fat32 hard disk.

The fact you cannot install a reg file is also a permissions issue according to you. That is why I think you missed up your user account and should create a new administration account.

Nothing was transferred over. The laptop is stand alone. I have done nothing to the accounts other than enter a name when the setup asked me to.
Everything I have read indicates gpedit.msc will allow me to do what 8 (core) will not.
I tried logging out...well....8 doesn't do it the same as I am used to. I'd have to go grab the laptop, but switch users was the option it gave me, I think.
Logged back in under the same name, no mouse, no touchpad....
The only add-ins I have done are Start8 and a registry "run" button.
I could understand if I'd tried to change my account, but it won't let me, so how did I change anything if everything is blocked?
One would think it would be laid out internally somewhat similarly to XP, but it's really different outside of the registry.
Stuff not in the same places I am used to going, search shows nothing, yet, when you start digging around, there is something with a word you searched for that did not show up.
I miss the search "wizard" or dog.
I think that 8 is not ready for prime time.
    Just a thought.
Backed up by some interesting threads on Microsoft Tech forums.

Basically, then, anything I do to get this 8 (core) to work the way I want it to is going to be hard changes to the registry.
The Group Edit download won't work.

Maybe I'll just give it a month or two until someone comes up with some stuff.
Meantime, I'll go see about this lockscreen delete and post back shortly.

Ah. There is so much I'm trying to remember.....I opened regedit, the path was still there, and now I know why that fix will not work.
In 8 (core), the path, HKEYLocal machine, software, policies, windows.....there is no "personalization" entry. Now, I can probably add one, but I'd need name, type and data entries, and I'd guess it wouldn't work. Without the OS having a path to it.
    Thoughts?

Did a registry search for "personalization".
Under HKEY Local Machine, software, classes, AppID, InputPersonalization.exe.
HKEY Local Machine, software, classes, CLSID, 137f5ec6-cf6b-482f-acea-c687dfbd199d, which says Microsoft Input Personalization Plug-In.

I just now read on a forum where the software in question failed to install on a lot of the member's computers.
The fix apparently is to save it to system 32, where it launches the .dll's.
Scary.....since I don't know if it will work with 8 anyway.
    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/add-g...it-msc-to-windows-7-home-and-starter-editions
"Download, Unzip and move it to Windows – System32. Now, try, in the RUN box Gpedit.msc. ”

Investigated totally now. Installed the 32Bit Home.My last info works for both 32Bit and 64Bit. members MUST run the installer, but it cannot find the path so then they manually transfer the GPedit.msc to System32. The installer sets up the .dlls and other items.

Apprehension (LOL) This was premium! Hopefully the basic, but that really is basic!!!!!!"

    Yeah, apprehension.

Policy registry keys don't always exist... Therefore you use gpedit or you do it yourself via regedit.

Trust me, I've had non pro users use my reg hacks.

  16. ScaleCraft

    ScaleCraft Private E-2

I trust you. I have no reason NOT to do so.
I am supposed to change the dword, right?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization
    Right?
    To "NoLockScreen"=dword:00000001 right?
I can get to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Windows no problem at all.
    There is no "Personalization".
I have in the past added thing to a registry, but in a new computer with a totally new OS, I need a little bit more guidance. Do I go under the Windows portion of that string, "new", and add "Personalization"?

Just asking, as I don't know.
    Thanks.

Right. Its not much different than an explorer folder structure. Create the new directory and then add the dword.

    ScaleCraft Private E-2

Done. Rebooted, seems to work fine.
The visuals are different in the registry than I am used to, throws me off a bit, plus I wasn't certain how this all worked in 8 (core).
Got any other reg hacks to get me to gpedit?
I'm lost trying to get into some files....and I just really, REALLY want to stop for sure some of the Metro stuff, and the MS stuff....and the Toshiba stuff.
I have a buddy who is an IT guy who yells at me...for 20 years to stop something, I just rename the file "hold02MAR13" and leave the original behind that. Computer cannot find it, I can, and I know when I did it.

    Thanks again.

No, I am unaware of a reg hack that will enable gpedit. I think there are files missing from 8.

If there is a specific policy setting you need, let me know and I will see if I can find the registry analog of it.

    Okay, several, but first one.
I would have gone my computer, Documents and Settings, Me, Application Data, and been there.
On 8, not that straightforward (to me anyway).
With my Start8 start menu, go to the top, select Me, open Application Data, it tells me not available, access denied.
If there is anything on a computer that drives me nuts, it's Access Denied.
However, if I hover over the folder "Application Data" and select properties, I did change the permissions, I am fully permitted to go there, but it won't let me.
If I was to be paranoid, I would think Redmond might be thinking I'd go in and figure out a way to kill off their stupid Metro UI.
I want to know what's in my computer, what the paths are, how it works.
    Keeps the brain cells jumping.
I talk to folks with 8 (pro), they can jump right into it.

I could buy a Pro upgrade, but money is an issue, and I am concerned about throwing more money at this if it never will be what I want it to be.

I figured if the program mentioned early in this thread would work on 8 as it does on 7, I could see if this OS will suit my needs.

That probably makes no sense, but since my first involvement with computers in 1969, I like to know what makes them tick.

MK3 MOD6 Sperry SINS, 4K core, drum, BCD keyboard, NIXIE tubes, all the registries flashed....IBM Selectric output device.

Digging deeper, it tells me I must have a password protected user account, which I do not want to have on this computer, ever, to access Application Data.

Hmm, yeah that is a protected folder.

Its been years since I worked doing Windows tech support, but try changing security on it from Safe Mode. That was a back door for us to change permissions on 'Home' OSes.

I have a password protected Windows 8 Pro and it too is locked down by default.

One of the first things we tried on this unit was safemode.
    HA!
    F8 does not work.
It supposedly is designed to automatically go into safemode if it detects a problem.
I read a blurb on doing it while the system was up and running.
Have to go dig that back up and see.
There was also shift and one of the F keys....but from what I have read, beta, development, early release and later release were all somewhat different in how you got there.
    Off to search.
    Thanks!

You can use msconfig to enable safeboot. That will drop you into safe mode.
