I have an old 64 Mb PC which is running Windows ME. I really can't afford a new PC so I was wondering if it was possible to install more memory. All I really want to do is to be able to watch news/music videos, use Google Earth, Skype, etc... I don't use the PC for work, only for surfing the net. Is it possible to add something to the PC? Or is it not worth the hassle?

PS, I also want to do it just to say "I did it!". :D

I going to ask the obvious, what brand (make model) of computer do you have?

You can download EVEREST Home (free) which will provide a lot of specs on your system so you can post these and people can provide greater answers:

Open Computer > Summary then print a report in .txt and post this.

Right. I've done that, saved the info in a .txt file, but how on earth do I get to post it? I can't copy and paste it.

Okay Sem firstly save your intended attachment to some where easy to get to, eg. desktop.

If we scroll down the post screen and see "Go Advanced" and then "Manage Attachments" open this and we now have a attachment window click on "Browse" and select file you wnat to attach, next click upload and if finished close window.

just an update over at my end. the lowest end of ram is sdram (dimm) pc100, which a single 512mb module costs a hellish US$75! of course, majorgeeks.com does have a trading room so that could be a better resort than ebay/other shops...

losc (waiting to see everest report)

    Hey Sem,

Your system uses a MSI motherboard (MS-6156)

It can take a maximum of 256MB of Unbuffered SDRAM over 2 slots (128MB per slot)

    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.asp?model=MS-6156

Im guessing your system has 1 x 64MB module and 1 slot free. Drop a 128MB in the spare slot and you should notice a considerable speed increase.

    Hope this helps,

Okay CrucialTech has provided an excellent link but Iook at the EVEREST report we can see that your current RAM is "System Memory 64 MB (PC100 SDRAM)" were PC100 is the current speed (i.e. 100MHz) were it can be seen that you have "CPU Type Intel Pentium IIIE, 667 MHz (5 x 133)". This is saying that your system has a FSB (front side bus) at 133MHz X 5 multiplier= 667MHz.

Now to get the most out of your system it would be excellent to get some of the ram listed by Tech but seriously consider leaving out the current 64Mb because it will slow any new RAM down to 100MHz (in comparison to PC133MHz). Although this may be slightly less RAM your mem and FSB will be at the same speed, 1:1 ratio and operate more efficiently. Trying to keep it simple but it would actually be more effective!

Here is a link for your Mainboard and owners manual so you can easily take the plunge if you decide to (easier than changing a tyre on a car!):

Furthermore the third selection would be the better and the crucial info you need when requesting such from a PC shop is:
    128Mb
    # Package: 168-pin DIMM
    # Feature: SDRAM, PC133
    # Specs: SDRAM, PC133 • CL=2 • Unbuffered • ECC • 133MHz • 3.3V • 16Meg x 72

The ECC (Error Correction Code) is a good idea if at the same price.

I'll look into it. Thanks a lot for the advice.I
