Hi. The PC was a mess. Lots of adfirstsolution ads popping up, home pages changing, rundll32 and RFManager error messages, IE shutting down frequently. I've been through your helpful READ & RUN ME FIRST procedures. Ran the recommended tools, except when I tried to scan with BitDefender, I repeatedly got an "Error on page" message (I had upgraded Sun Java to 5.0). Also ran Ewido Anti-Spyware.

Since running the tools earlier today, I haven't seen many problems other than adfirstsolution pop-ups -- which are as bad as ever. Logs from Panda ActiveScan, Ewido and HJThis are attached.

We have Windows XP and McAfee Anti-Virus/Firewall.

I'm grateful for any help you can give me.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    Please follow the directions in step 7 of the READ ME. You installed HijackThis here;

    C:\Documents and Settings\Suzanne\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

That is exactly where the directions specify not to install it. I don't understand why people ignore the large bold print in step 7 specifying to click the link and follow the directions. Fix this now before continuing.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\dfndrc_4a.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\nbkppwaA.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [defender] C:\\dfndrc_4a.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nbkppwaA] C:\WINDOWS\nbkppwaA.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Program Files\EngageSidebar <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\RegiFast <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nodeipproc.dll
    C:\Program Files\Online Services\mebomihy.dll
    C:\dfndrc_4a.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\nbkppwaA.exe
    c:\VSL02.exe
    C:\526_620.exe
    C:\ac3_0003.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Hi, again. Thanks for helping me so quickly -- and sorry about messing up the HJT installation. I fixed that.

I went through your recommendations and our problems seem to be gone! Five of the files or folders I was directed to delete in safe mode couldn't be found (EngageSidebar folder, RegiFast folder, nodeipproc.dll, mebomihy.dll and 526_620.exe), but I assume that means they were cleaned up in one of the earlier steps. I deleted C:\dfndrc_4a.exe as instructed; there was also a C:\dfndrc_4.exe, which I left alone--was that the right call?

If I could, I'd like to ask your advice on a couple of things.

I'm using a Linksys Cable Gateway that has a firewall built-in. Should I have the McAfee firewall enabled, too?

I downloaded ewido anti-spyware 4.0 when trying to get rid of my malware problems and it's now launching whenever I boot up. Should I uninstall it, or is it good to have it running alongside the McAfee programs?

Last question -- and this may be beyond the scope of malware problems -- but can you tell from the HJT log why our PC has been unable to run videos off the internet? When we click on the play button we get "Error on page" messages, or in some cases, a blank window opens without any control buttons to start the video.

Please let me know if the HJT log looks clean. I'll wait to hear from you before doing the final step with System Restore. This is a wonderful service you are providing. I truly appreciate it.

Delete the other file you found too.

Yes! A software firewall is still highly recommended, especially if you have other PCs on a network behind the router.

Did you purchase Ewido or do you plan on purchasing it. It would only be of long term use if you buy it. If you did not buy it and are not going to, then uninstall it.

No! We cannot tell this from your log and your are correct that it would be a question better asked in another forum like the Software Forum.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
