In the guides and frequently asked section/Disable unneeded Services In Windows XP the link is dead....

Also in the Basic Computer Maintenance everyone should do section Startup Items: It says to use the facility in Ccleaner to disable them, but ive read on this forum elsewhere that this isn't a good idea because it uses the MSConfig utility to do this, which isn't the ideal way.

    Which is correct?:confused

I dont mean to pick faults but i want to do the best for my pc.

In case its your computer- here is major attitudes post Disable Unneeded Services In Windows XP

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disabling services can be a way to improve your computers performance. To get to them, go to your Control Panel, Administrative Tools and Then Services.
Many of these services you may not need, but are using resources for. Each service has a description and is either started Automatically, Manually or Disabled. Each item you select will give a description to the left of the screen. Better then average computer knowledge is helpful here. If you are not sure you need a particular service, then leave it alone. If your sure you do not need a service, then disable it. Your best bet is to do this slowly over time, so you can make sure that if something goes wrong, you can easily change it back.

BlackViper.com has a list of services along with what they suggest you do. Use it at your own risk, but its probably the best services list to be found on the internet.

I have underlined the method- This is the best way to stop a service starting, msconfig can be messed with and cause a few more problems than the services- Although stopping, or, altering any services can be risky- take the advice from the majorgeek main men, if you want to do this read up the black viper link, and whatever you do , write down on a piece of paper any changes to original that you make , as you do it- so that you can return to original if you do stop an important service.

    Link worked for me too.

CCleaner isn't the best way to disable start up items as it does not make a back up and so is less forgiving than other ways. Try using StartUp CPL which you can download from here http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_CPL_d619.html
