    Hello,

So I followed everything in the READ ME thread and the Cleaning Instructions and I still have problems.

    • When I log in to my laptop, this Run.dll error pops up saying:
"There was a problem starting C:\Users\[username]\AppData\roaming\serms.dll
The specified module could not be found"
    • Adobe Flash Installer pops up maybe every 2 minutes (it is really annoying)
    • My avast! antivirus has detected a couple of Trojan viruses

These problems started about a month ago and I was just searching fashion/celebrity photos on Google.

    Help would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Rescan with HitmanPro
    • When it finds services.exe - Virus, allow it to Replace by clicking the down arrow next to the detection and choosing Replace.
    • Leave any other detections alone (Ignore them).
    • Afterwards, click the Next button.
    • HitmanPro may want to reboot the PC in order for the changes to take affect, please do so.
    • After reboot and when you are back in Windows, run another scan with HitmanPro and then attach the latest hitmanpro.zip log See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.
Then run RogueKiller and run a scan. After it finishes the scan, select the Registry tab and then select any of the below that exist and then click the Delete button.

Then select the Files tab and if the below exist, click the Delete button again.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

After reboot, run a new scan with RogueKiller and save a log as in original instructions and attach the new log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new Hitman log
    • the new RogueKiller log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

On behalf of us both, you are welcome. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks for this!

While following the steps, though, I came across a problem with Windows Update. I click Check for updates and the following pops up: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I've tried restarting and tried changing the settings off and on (as in selecting Never install back to Install automatically), but the problem wasn't resolved. Is there a way to fix this? I've tried searching for some solutions, but the ones I found don't work. There's an issue with my firewall, too. It says I can't update my firewall settings (error: 0x80070424). Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

Download this BFE.reg to your desktop.
Double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
You should recieve a success message. Let me know.
Does windows update work now, and is your firewall ok? :confused

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

OK, so I'm at this step: "Create a System Restore point if prompted."

A small box popped up titled Backup Progress and below it, says "Waiting for Volume Shadow Copy snapshot" and it's been going on for a couple of hours now. Is this normal?

Then please try to do it in safe mode.

And if this still does not work then skip creating the restore point. It is possible that the service required for System Restore may also be currently broken. It is also very likely that the registry keys for your BITS service have been deleted and will need to be replaced.

Safe mode worked, thanks! I attached the MGlogs.zip

Okay that looks better but as I expected, BITS is missing.

Download the below file and save it to your Desktop
    BITS.reg
Then right click on it and select Merge. If prompted, allow it to be added to your registry. Then reboot.

After reboot, download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Please re-run RogueKiller and attach a new log. I want to see if the below hidden partitions still show up. Do you know what these are?
    Code:
    2 - [XXXXXX] NTFS (0x17) [HIDDEN!] Offset (sectors): 1405896704 | Size: 18578 Mo
    3 - [XXXXXX] NTFS (0x17) [HIDDEN!] Offset (sectors): 1443944448 | Size: 10353 Mo
    User = LL1 ... OK!
    User = LL2 ... OK!

Also copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
