it's driving me nuts. I get from one to 5 requests per internet window change. if I click on "don't notify me of this program warning", will that shut it down? or will it interfer with important warnings? we don't use flash and don't want it pestering us.
meanwhile, I get requests to access the internet from packaged programs on this computer that I don't use-symantics, for instance, (I use avg instead) how do I cancel the requests from them? all I can do for now is block them each time that they appear, but that's often and they're annoying.
    thank you.

It will not shut the program down. The requests you see are programs checking for updates. I go through programs and tell all of them, "do not ever check for updates" and I also tell my firewall to remember if I have blocked something. You should be able to go into your firewall and change the block to an allow, if you change your mind in the future.
Symantec doesn't just do Norton. If you've ever installed Ghost, you will get the symantec. Look in your control panel. Do you have an Update entry? It's probably the thing asking for permission.
