Adobe Reader Error

I am helping my Dad with some problems running some programs. The main repeatable problem that caused him to refer it to me is Adobe Reader will not open. Reader 9.?? does not open and shows the following message:

Adobe Reader (Red "X") "An internal error occurred."

(screenshot attached in Malware Removal forum, title "Problem running some programs - logs attached")

Dad thinks the problem started around the time Norton Security Suite was installed (from Comcast). Can't confirm this. Problem has been ongoing for at least 3 months. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Reader several times, even tried Reader 8.??, with and without Norton Security Suite installed.

This same error appears at other times, when Adobe Reader has not been launched. It appears at every login to this account, probably the initial Adobe startup. Dad's is the main account, administrator rights. There is one other account on This PC, and this error does not appear when logged in to that account, and Reader launches successfully. Tried installing Adobe Reader using the 2nd account, and the results were the same. Error in Dad's account, OK in 2nd account.

Ran all Malware programs as suggested in Malware Removal forum, but was told it is not a malware problem.

    Thanks for any help!

Rather than fight with Adobe Reader, switching to Foxit Reader might be a much easier solution. You can get it here: http://majorgeeks.com/Foxit_Reader_d4763.html

If you try Foxit Reader and it runs without issues, I'd just say goodbye to Adobe Reader and remove it.

I've been a user of Adobe Reader for many years but, with my recent installation of Win 7, I opted for Foxit Reader instead of Adobe Reader and I'm pleased with it. So, Adobe Reader is not going to find a home on my Win 7 system.

If I had a problem like that, here's what I'd try:

Downlaod and install Revo Uninstaller if you don't already have it.

Create a new Restore point using System Restore and name it with something
appropriate so that you'll know what it is if you need to use it later.

Using Revo Uninstaller, uninstall Adobe Reader using the Moderate setting and let it delete any leftover
registry keys it may find after the normal uninstall process.

Then, using Microsoft Internet Explorer, goto Windows Live OneCare and run the Clean Up option.

It will search for erroneous Registry entries during the process.
By default, it creates a new Restore Point before it makes any changes.

Create another new restore point with a name that indicates that you have
    finished your clean up.

    Reboot.

Download the latest version of Adobe Reader and do a fresh install.

Be sure to quit any running programs before each step.

If this does not work, I'd go back to one of the last two restore points where
Adobe had already been removed and then use the suggestion given by usafveteran for Foxit Reader.

    That's how I'd handle it.
There will be adequate restore points to use if something goes awry.

Thanks, I will try these in the order mjnc suggested. Will try to report back with results.
