Newby here. Just built my first system. Using Windows XP #2 qas OS. Loaded all drivers. Seems to be working ok except the printer. Have a HP Deskjet F4280. Loaded the printer driver. I can scan documents but refuses to print. When I try to print any document a window opens telling me that Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and it needs to close. I click on the "technical info" and it gives me the following: AppName:acrord32.exe, ModName: hpz3r5mu.dll, Mod/Ver: 61.73.241.0, Offset: 000a0490.
I have tried Reader 9.3 and 8. Both versions refuse to cooperate. Is there something I'm overlooking? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Hi, I cannot offer a solution to your Adobe Reader problem but I can offer an alternative suggestion.

Unless you have a specific need, or love, of Adobe reader, I suggest you try:
    Foxit Reader 3.3.3

My note: Great rating, 88,000 downloads from MG alone.
Uninstall Adobe reader first, then try Foxit Reader. You can always re-install Adobe reader if you don't like Foxit Reader.

Thanks Solaris/bigbazza. I will really like to stay with Acrobat. I have an older computer that is workintg find with it, so it most be something in the software of one of the programs that I loaded. The question is why is scanning ok but refuses to print.

I have Adobe Reader installed on a Win XP desktop PC and a Win Vista laptop and it works fine. But, when I recently installed Win 7 on another desktop PC, I decided to install Foxit Reader instead of Adobe Reader and Foxit works quite well. You won't know what it's like unless you try it and there's really not a good reason not to try it.

Regarding the toolbar solaris89 mentioned, you can opt out during installation. For info on that, see http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1384221

For the past ten years or more, Adobe Reader has gotten bigger and bigger to the point of being HUGE, slow and invasive and still does no more than allow you to read PDF files.
It's slow to load and as witnessed, it can interfere with other programs.

It's high time to dump that turkey and get something smaller and faster to do the same job.
I'm personally uninstalling Adobe Reader from all my customer's PCs and replacing it with Foxit Reader. It's FREE!

Be careful when installing it, as with many other programs today, because they all seem to want to install something extra that you don't want or need. Uncheck all the boxes for the extras and accept only the basic program.

    Good Luck,
    The Shadow :cool

Just a note of caution about Foxit. I downloaded and printed off some Visa forms using it, but failed to notice it hadn't printed the bottom of page 1, not on page 1 nor on a continuation sheet. My visa applications failed because of it and caused a serious problem. I reinstalled Acrobat and with a hairy car journey managed to save the trip. Contacts in the printing business have also declared it unsuitable for professional use.

It's OK if you just need to open the odd PDF but I wouldn't recommend it.

PDF-XChange Viewer Home Page. Look on left, right below banner, for the free viewer download.

Saw this in a post by solaris89 almost two years ago. Tried it, dumped Adobe, Foxit and never looked back. Many thanks solaris89.

I'm about to try replacing Acrobat with PDF-XChange viewer but see in Revo that Acrobat isn't that much of a monster at 3.90MB, it's Adobe AIR which I think came with it, 30.67MB which is the biggie. Is it needed? What does it do?

Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat are two different things. Reader is the reader and is free. Acrobat is Adobe's PDF creation/publishing software and is not free. So, it makes no sense to compare Adobe Acrobat to any PDF reader.

It's Reader I'm talking about, but if you look at installed programs in Win 7 it is actually called Acrobat. Was in mine anyway.

The Reader/Acrobat differences are a bit clearer here:

Actually, I owe an apology. Awhile back I used PDF X-Change viewer and completely forgot I switched to Nitro PDF not too long ago. As good as PDF X-change is, I feel Nitro is even better. It's also got an Office-like interface.

If you want to take your thanks back, I'm cool with that. :-D

What Nitro PDF product are you talking about? Nitro PDF Professional is not freeware. Nitro does have some freeware, which is mainly various converters such as PDF to Word, etc. But, as far as just a PDF reader, which is the subject of this discussion, I don't see that from Nitro.

I watched the demo. Looks good, I may get it and compare it to Foxit Reader in my Win 7 system. Thanks for posting the link. :)
