Had a strange issue - Hoping this will help someone else.

I have a Samsung 10.1 tab that still had Android 3.xx on it. (mainly for the kid)

About 2 months ago the device would not connect to any Google.com based site with the browser .. Picasa / play / Account.. Nothing. It would just time out. All other sites were fine and if I added a second browser -- that would work fine and connect to all Google sites. Only the default browser, which is native, was busted. Which, is a problem.

Adding the google name servers to my router helped (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) but was not exactly stable.

Clearing and and system didnt work - so I reset the device. It still didn't work with Google sites.

Eventually I realized I had never update the OS .. Settings >> About>> Software Update.

Now it works perfectly - but I have a ton of games to reinstall for the boy.

Just shows, sometimes the easiest thing can be overlooked. But also I have the nagging question as to why it ONLY effected the default browser. The the really nagging question of why the name server changed helped the issue... If all other things worked fine without the name server change. Monitoring? Hmmm...

Anyhow - Hope this helps someone out the surfing. :major

Did you do a Factor Restore, then reload in the latest Firmware that Samsung offers, to see if that resolved the issue? Do you use any proxy type server, like OpenDNS? What happens if you take the device somewhere else like a friends place or Micky D's, and connect to the wifi network there, then use Chrome and go to Google.com?

When you did the reset, you only connected to the router, and did not make any other changes to the device did you? As for changing the DNS servers on your router, it may help speed up resolving going to other sites, but would not cause the issues at hand.

Also, do you have the same type of problems on your network if he signs into say Chrome, and tries to go to google sites?

Places like Micky D's that hand out free internet well not free if you are buying food lol:-D will block specific sites just for the heck of it.Sounds like what ever routers you are using must have a block or some thing added to there black list.

Actually not, since ATT runs the hotspots for Mickey D's, and soon will no longer be for Starbucks, since Google & Level 3 will be taking over those. Now they will keep track of what people are doing on the public hotspots, but I have not found any sites blocked on the McDonald's hotspots that ATT owns.

I am really not saying that Micky D's does it but other places do.

Yes, there are places like airports, public libraries, some private bistros, or hotels, but we are not asking the OP to go there to check this problem out. Also if you had read their post, they are not trying to do anything illegal, and do not have a policy problem, they have a issue with the laptop not connecting to Google sites, which would not be blocked in the first place.
