I am running both programs. Trend Micro's AdSubtract blocks Sunbelt Software's CounterSpy updates. Disabling AdSubtract does not solve the problem. Any Ideas?

    Thanks,

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

That does not really make any sense. If disabling AdSubtract does not solve the problem why do you still think it is responsible for blocking CounterSpy's updates. Try uninstall AdSubtract. Do you still have a problem? If so, it is not AdSubtract.

Do you have a firewall? Is it blocking the updates?

yes, exactly. I uninstall it and updates work fine. When I reinstall it, the problem occurs again. The only "firewall" i have is the windows security and Trend Micro's PC Cillin "firewall" not an actual hardware firewall.

    Any ideas?

Is AdSubtract a paid version? What about CounterSpy? If they are paid versions, you need to speak to them about the incompatibility. Personally I see no need for AdSubtract to be installed.

Your Windows firewall should be disabled if you are using PC Cillin's firewall. I would be surprised if PC Cillin did not disable the Windows firewall by default

Both are full paid, licensed versions.

    Here is what TM says:

The reason behind this is that AdSubtract passes by a proxy which allows it to filter sites. Have you tried just disabling instead of uninstalling AdSubtract, then download the updates?

the above does not solve the problem.

Sunbelt says there is no fix but to uninstall AdSubtract.

    Any other ideas?

If Trend Micro cannot fix the problem or the AdSubtract software does not have a way to add acceptable sites to a list then ask for a fix or a refund. Perhaps there is a way you could also install the CounterSpy updates with a manual approach rather than automatically but I find things like this to be quite annoying. Any software that does not let me do what I need/want to do is uninstalled from my PC immediately.

As I said earlier, I don't see a need for the program anyway. CounterSpy is a whole lot more important than AdSubtract. Using a browser like FireFox gives you a reasonable popup blocker anyway without having to run anything additional.

actually, i found a workaround, which is to disable AdSubtract from my startup files, this allows Sunbelt's CounterSpy to update. Then When I want to go on line I simply open AdSubtract and allow it to block all the popups.

Better than uninstalling for updates and reinstalling after updates.

Guess I'm not quite as dumb as I thought.

As long as you don't mind always having to do that....then fine!

I see no need for an external popup blocker at all. The one in the FireFox browser is more than sufficient for me. And quite often I don't even use FireFox as I do a large amount using IE (on purpose to be exposed to what people having problems are exposed to) and I do not have problems with popups. But having a firewall (like ZoneAlarm) is also blocking popup ads. So IMHO, the additional resource load of a popup blocker is not needed since a good browser and a firewall (a necessity) is sufficient.
