"advanced tone controls" not working in XP

I bought new desktop speakers (logitec Z-4s) for my laptop which is an insprion 8600.

I have little if any bass so I went into my control pannel, sounds and audio devices and find that the "advanced controls" (bass and treble) are not functional.

It says I'm using "Sigma Tel Audio" as my default playback and recording so... what should I do to fix this? install a new driver/programme?

any help appreciated...

Oh, I ran down a copy of the current driver for the sigma tel audio program and when I tried to install it I get this message:

"Device object not present. Restart the system and try again"
