Question do you have any sounds when Windows starts up? I assuming that u checked that the drivers are compatible? Did u check that sounds in control panel that the right driver is listed and the audio device is correct? check your sound device playback is also correct...

According to this http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/7094.htm And, according to that, these drivers should be the ones you need http://www.majorgeeks.com/Realtek_AC97_Drivers_d4400.html You have a Realtek AC'97 sound card on your board. Go to your 'device manager' and do you see any yellow '?' or '!'? To get to the device manager, right click 'My Computer,' properties, hardware and then device manager. Also, when you re-installed XP, did you also install the chipset drivers for your MB? Let me know!
