Hello I’m having a problem with computer I have a 2000 HP Pavillion model 8860 has a 60 gig hard drive, an `1G AMD processor. Came with 128 memory, came with Windows millennium edition. I recently had a friend install Window XP and updated with updated Microsoft office. The was computer was working fine for several weeks, but I went to add a NASCAR Sim game and it told me I didn’t have enough memory. So I installed a new 256 PC133 168 pin memory stick and that’s when my problem started.
I went to start it back up after installation of Ram. And I got the following message.
“We apologize for the inconvenience,. But Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders. (Choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent setting that worked.) If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren’t sure what caused the problem, choose (Start Windows Normally)

Below are the option that it gave me gave me.

    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with networking
    Safe mode with command prompts
    Start Windows normally
Last Known Good configuration. (Your last recent settings that worked)

I attempted last known Config 1st nothing happened then eventually ended up trying all of them repeadatly no change. I basically just keeps repeating prompts over and over. Several times it freezes up. And a few times it opened up normally for a minute or two and then automatically shut down and reboot by itself. I had one other message that I didn’t write down, but it wen’t something like this system32/driver corrupted windows can’t operate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Marv

So do you have 128 AND 256 RAM in your system, or just the 256? Also, how many slots do you have in your box for memory? If you have another slot, I'd suggest getting an additional stick of 256 once you get this problem sorted out.
Something to try: Remove the stick of memory and re-install it, just to make sure it's seated properly. If you have both sticks of memory in (the 128 and the 256) there may be a specific order to put them in. I'm not sure which stick should go in which slot, but it may not hurt to switch them to see what happens.
You might also try taking out the 256 and seeing if it runs on the old 128, just to see what happens.
Hope you get this sorted out.
