I now have adware on another computer. I have run all the initial steps, but had to run several of the scans more than once due to my computer being re-booted. This happened more during the online scans than any other. A window would pop up saying that the system was shutting down initiated by NT authority\system. Then in a sub-window it said that windows\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. All the logs attached are from the finally successful scans. Thanks again for your time.

Continue by downloading a tool we will need - PocketKillBox
Save it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

    * Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    * On the page that opens, scroll down to:
    Network helper Service (MSDisk)

    * then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    * When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    * Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    * Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    * At the lower right, click on the Config button
    * Then click the Misc tools button
    * Select Delete an NT Service
    * Copy/paste Network helper Service into the box that opens, and press OK
    * If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    * Now exit HJT

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:

    * Delete on Reboot
    * then Click on the All Files button.
    * Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\uniq
    C:\WINDOWS\ubber60.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\LastGood\Downloaded Program Files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hsfolobr.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcefe.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcefe.ini2

    * Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    * Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Okay, I performed the steps, but there were a couple issues...

    * Copy/paste Network helper Service into the box that opens, and press OK
    * If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.

It did receive an error - it could not find "Network helper Service" and asked for its short name. I ignored it and continued as instructed.

HJK - The following HJK entries were not there to check and fix...
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {46A4E9D9-B30E-452A-8157-DBBEC8573B03} - C:\Program Files\VSAdd-in\VSAdd-in.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: Network helper Service (MSDisk) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\irdvxc.exe" /service (file missing)

The computer rebooted itself with NTauthority box during the fix so I had to go back and start over.

I did receive the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt from killbox.

I am still receiving adware pop ups.

Damn, sorry I forgot to merge the registry fixme!!!!! I am going to do that and then pick up your fix from there.

Sorry! I will re submit with new scans

Okay, sorry about screwing that up. The new logs are attached now.

After running killbox again, I did get the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt again.

And I am still receiving adware popups, and a blank 'error detected' window.

When the computer booted up, symantec anti-virus found and quarantined a file: aiferrcy.dll.

You are not updated ..when we are done, you will need to get all Windows XP security updates, esp. SP2.

    In the meantime:
Please download and install (make sure you update when it asks) the below:

    SUPERAntiSpyware

And then run a Complete Scan (not a Quick Scan) on your system. When the scan finishes, save the log and attach the log here so we can see how effective it was. Please be patient as this can take quite awhile since it is running a very comprehensive scan. It would be best if you ran it and then did nothing else on the PC while the scan is running. Therefore try running it when you don't need the PC or even run it while you sleep.

Then attach new logs from ShowNew and HijackThis.

TimW, thanks for all your help. My problem is fixed now, but probably not the way expected. Somehow SUPERAntiSpyware caused my computer to shutdown and it couldn't boot up again. So I ended up doing a complete re-load of windows and updated to SP2. I have not had any problems since. I have scanned for spyware and it looks clean. Thanks again.
