Hi - Hope you guys can help with this..

    I had a 'xp anti-virus 2011' fake security problem.

PC is Dell Dimension. 2 GB Ram. Windows XP Home edition SP2

I have run all the options in the read me and the initial problem seems to have gone. i.e. I have not seen the false pop up when logged on as the infected user.

    HOWEVER

Since running these tools I am unable to run any .exe files

When I attempt it the 'File association' dialog opens.

I am able to open 'My Documents' and 'My Computer' from Start Menu, but most other desktop and start menu links do not work.

    This include Regedit.

Also - atempting to read 'Properties' of a shortcut produces 'APPLICATION NOT FOUND' Rundll32.exe

I have all the logs if releveant - but since the initial problem seems cured I assume that this may be a different issue.

Truly appreciate the stirling work that you do here! Hope for a reply asap:)

Yes, attaching the requested logs would be the best way to go, so I shall review those as soon as I get chance. In the meantime try the below in order to get programs to open again:

Please download RogueKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Now quit all running programs.
    • Double click RogueKiller.exe to run it.
    • When prompted, type 1 and hit Enter.
    • A RKreport.txt should appear on your desktop.
    • Note: If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe .
    • Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.

Now run the C:\MGtools\FixFA.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Now reboot your PC and see if there is any change to this problem.

Re: After clearup - no .exe wil run -sorted I hope

Hi - I think I 've sorted it myself. I found this link (and good info)

    http://filext.com/faq/broken_exe_association.php

Which led me to this (Save as -- do NOT run unless you are sure)

    http://filext.com/WinXP_EXE_Fix.reg[/url]

I had to run it from the user login - it didn't work when run from safe mode.

    Thanks

I Think I may have made a major mistake..

Hi - Not sure if this should be a new thread - but it relates to my previous issues.

    Symptoms:
My PC will not start XP at all (not in normal or any safe mode).
A Blue screen says 'Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer'

    How did I get there?
I ran SuperAntiSpyware. Log is attached.
After the scan it reported 3 items (relateds to Security Center Disabled) marked with a yellow warning, and 1 trojan marked in red.
The Red Item was checked, but the yelow was not.
I stupidly checked the yellow items before continuing the cleanup.
During the cleanup I believe SAS reported that it was 'removing windows security centre'
After the reboot the system bluescreened as described.

    What Have I done since?
I have a bootable CD (Hirens Boot CD) which allows me to run 'Mini XP' from the CD.
Using this I have recovered the log file attached.
I have also copied the whole of the HDD to an external HDD so I have data.
I have performed a system restore to a known good point

I have a Dell 'Reinstallation Disc' but I surely hope that it is possible to recover this without a return to teh 'as bought' state of the PC since it is a couple of years old - with all the associated installs, upgrades etc.

Thanks again for any help you can give in recovering from this mistake.

If the post belongs elsewhere please advise.

    Thanks - Mr Nood

    Hi

    Sorry - that was misleading.

Although I performed the restore it did not fix the problem.

I am unable to boot into windows at all (blue screen).

The whole story is - I cannot get to windows either from normal or safe mode (with or without command prompt. However - just once I did manage to get in with command prompt, and ran the restore from there. I cannot at the moment repeat that - or get to windows with command prompt.

All attempts to boot to windows from the HDD result in bluescreen.

I can launch mini XP from CD - but I believe that this version is actually running from the CD and hence does not see the installed windows settings.

    Thanks
    MrNood

Then until you are back up and running I cannot assist you. You would be better off asking about this in the software forum and then you can retuen here to finish up any malware removal. :)
