After READ and RUN still have (hopefully) small issues

    Hi,

My original problem was general slowness, and a tendency for my computer to sound like a jet engine about to take off or explode. Firefox would be slow, if at all, to respond, and there didn't seem to be a good reason. This has been true for a couple years, but getting worse recently.

I ran kaspersky, avg and malwarebytes on my own (nothing shocking found). Then I came here and ran the housecleaning process - much of my trouble was probably solved by updating java.

Then I ran the malware steps for XP - I'll attach the logs.

So far I haven't seen the worst of the slowdowns anymore. I still have moments when I can hear things spinning up and when I look in task manager, wlancfg4.exe is almost always firing - and as far as I can tell it's from a Netgear USB device I haven't used in forever (I'm using a D-link one now). It doesn't show up in add/remove programs.

I searched and found others who have had the same or similar trouble - the answer seems to be manually editing the registry, but I didn't find specifics. Since I'm not a fan of blindly editing the reg and also since I don't want to negate the logs I just made...

I'd love it if someone could check the logs to see if there's anything else lurking, and any advice on how to safely get rid of the Netgear stuff would be great.

Let me know if I've messed up any of the steps from READ and RUN.

    Thanks,

    Jennifer

This is not a malware issue. I would suggest you post in either software or hardware.

The sound may well me an indictation that your fans are clogged with dust. When was the last time you blew the case out?

You can do the following to remove the old netgear items:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Program Files\NETGEAR
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\MA111nd5.sys

Then go to device manager and under network adapters, remove the netgear adapter.

Thanks for your help - and for putting up with something that wasn't strictly speaking a malware problem. I'm a newly converted fan of your site - my machine seems quite happy now after its thorough cleaning. Also, thanks for the reminder about the dust - it was already on my list of things to do this weekend.
