age of empires 3 mac vs pc

Hi, I know someone else posted a similar thread to this one but it didn't help so I gotta ask again. I've got a pc and a mac and we're trying to play age of empires 3 (the original) together (cause the mac has dynasties but the pc only has warchiefs). we've connected the two laptops via ethernet cable and gone into multiplayer, then LAN. yesterday for some reason when I hosted a game on the mac it showed up on the PC but said crc mismatch. so today I updated each version because I read that the updated versions of the games are compatible, but now when I host a game with either computer it doesn't show on the other one when I refresh. I've even tried manually inputing the ip address, but no luck. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? thanks
