Age of empires question

how can I play against my son , we both have laptops mine windows 7 ,his vista. Can we just physically link them as we live in the same house or is there some other way?

I'm not familiar with AoE, but is there a LAN option for multiplayer? If you're connected to one another by a router, then one of you should be able to host a multiplayer game and have the other join using this option. It would ask whichever of you is not hosting for the ip address of the host, which you can get by going to the start menu of the host computer, typing cmd into the 'search programs and files' field at the bottom left, and then typing ipconfig into the window that opens. This would not require internet.

I think you may be able to connect to one another without a router and play in a similar fashion if there is a Serial Connection option in multiplayer by physicaly connecting via crossover cable or thru your COM1 ports, though honestly at this point I'm just batting ideas around, I've never linked offline except through LAN and I'm limited in networking saavy.

If you're both connected to the net, one of you should be able to connect to the AoE multiplayer server if they have one and host a game for the other, or connect directly using an ip address also.

On Age of Empire (AoE) main menu select multiplayer

3 connection options appear ,select Internet TCP/ip connection for direct play.

then select create if you are the host player or join if you are not the host

This brings up the game page . Onthis page is a box marked ip select this to get your ip number which every player that wants to join must enter on their game page. Now choose your game settings and nation and click I'm ready button . these instructions are for the host player. If you are joining the game enter the ip number that the host will already have given you on the game page then choose your nation and select I'm ready.
