Hi, I seem to have picked up a virus that AVG found. I'm going through the Windows XP cleaning, but am stuck on the rootrepeal. I keep getting the bandwidth error there.

    Now what?

Never mind. I don't know how to delete this, but now I tried it again and it's working. Will return with logs when I can.

I've attached the logs. I'm not sure if I did not do something right, I had the message tool-Nir Cmd pop up and quarrintined it.

My computer has been crashing every so often lately, not sure what caused it and exactly when it started. It also is running slow.

    Last log.

When I am done with all of this, do I need to go back to the programs to undo what I checked/unchecked or do I just delete them and not do anything else with them?

    Thanks for all your help!

The cleaning procedure has remove the worst of your problems. We have a few remaining details to take care of.

First you need to stop saving your downloads in the C:\Program Files folder. This folder should only contain installed programs not your download or anything else in the root folder. This can slow your PC down and it can help allow malware to more easily hide. Examples like below. If you need them, move them elsewhere. Otherwise delete them.
    Code:

Sinilarly, I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {F2B441CC-E026-47fb-BDC3-A07750FA3D2C} - (no file) (HKCU)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

The largest cause for your complaint about a slow PC may just be AVG9.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks! I didn't realize that I had downloaded all these things there. I had another file for all my downloaded programs but somehow they ended up there.

Question: I may have boo-booed in the very last thing I was suposed to do (and I had been doing so well up to this point!) On the disable/enable system restore, when I first went to it, the box was checked and I unchecked it then rebooted. I keep reading the next part over but I must be having a senior moment, as I'm not sure if I did this part right. Was I suposed to leave it checked then proceed??

    Thanks for all your help!

After you rebooted, go back and check the box. That will allow you to create new system restore points. ;)
