AGP 2.0 card in 1.0 slot??

I am confused.

I have an old Dell Dimension XPS T450 (now 800) with the Intel 440BX (Intel SE400BX-3) motherboard (circa late 1999) that I play around with. About 7 months ago I threw in an old 64 MB Radeon 7000 that I picked up for a couple of bucks. I did not consider AGP version compatibility when I installed the card, assuming that the mobo was AGP 2.0 since it was the fairly high end Dell for the time and AGP 2.0 came out in 1999.

The card has been working with no problems. Granted, I do not use it very much.

Out of curiosity, I ran PC Wizard system utility and learned that this machine has an AGP 1.0 compliant slot, but the requirements on the card (that I found at ATI.com) state that an AGP 2.0 slot is necessary.

How is this card working?? Should I cease using it in this machine?

I think you are confusing standards and speed multipliers here.

There are three Intel standards

AGP 1.0
with speed multipliers 1x and 2x

AGP 2.0
with speed multipliers 1x and 2x and 4x

AGP 3.0
with speed multipliers 1x and 2x and 4x and 8x

You can't plug an AGP 2 card into an AGP 1 slot, because it has an additional key, which is a good thing because they are different voltage.

Nope. That is exactly the source of my confusion.

Both the specs from Dell and PC Wizard say that the port is version 1.0.

While the ATI support page says "2.0 compliant." Unless that means COMPLIANT but not required and backwards compatible??

So if it fits, its all good?
