agp4x question

a friend told me that the current top of the line vid cards cant max out the bandwidth of a 4x agp slot , then why do they make certain cards pci-e only like the 7800 series? thats is if he is in fact correct about what he said about 4 x bandwidth.

 

You can't accurately explain it like that.

The AGP and bus system had to be overhauled as it didn't supply enough power (as in current) (and in the future, bandwith) to the card.

That's why you needed a power connector for late model AGP cards.


They make certain cards PCI Xpress only because GPU technology progresses at an amazing rate, and it's not compatible with AGP.

 

I think that was a fact, about 3 years ago.

AGP 8X wasn't fully tapped, afaik. However, I read somewhere when hunting for video card reviews that PCI Express is finally starting to make a difference.

 

thanks guys for the info makes a little more sense now. id like to go pci-e one day so i can have my pick of any vid card there is, but for now my 6800 gt/oc agp 8x plays everything great. suppose ill upgrade when games start to demand more than what i have can handle.

 

1X 2X 4X 8X 16X compared #s say it all ........



[Edit]: i should add that 4X PCIe is = to 8X AGP...
