Hello! I know it must not be great fun to help a person who is begging for it on their first post. To put a little background to an anonymous post, I'm a middle aged, midwestern, single dad, who is only semi-computer literate. HUGE thanks in advance for any help provided.

About my computer problem. I only noticed it on 03/14/12 when I got a strange error message from AVG & the computer automatically shut down. My computer will now only successfully boot into safe mode without getting blue screens, I've booted with network connectivity to post this. So with just safe mode, I've had issues following the instructions exactly as I cannot uninstall programs & I could not 100% remove AVG with the AVG remover, although I did run it.

Attached are the logs from following the instructions.

I have a 64 bit system so the Root Repeal was skipped. Hopefully I have included everything & followed the instructions well enough.

    Thanks! Anxiously awaiting your response.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please do the below so that we can boot to System Recovery Options to run a scan.

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this file to your next reply. (See: How to attach)

First of all, my sincerest apologies for this reply taking so long! My ISP was down for quite some time due to very harsh weather, I greatly appreciate you trying to help me.

Second, Today I have noticed if disable the network connection my computer appears to have no problems. Once I enable it is when I get the anti-virus pop-ups and blue screens.

Third, attached is the file you requested. Thank you so much in advance and there will no longer be any delay in my responses. thanks!!!

I'm not seeing any obvious malware issues. Let's check deeper.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

After attach the logs from TDSSKiller and MBRcheck, continue with the below.

Download this >> View attachment fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.
Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now boot into normal Windows can continue with the below.

Attached are the files you requested, thank you for the response & direction.

I had an issue with Frst64. I started it and clicked fix after following your instructions and it ran for about 9 hours before I forced it to close. It looks like it can't find some of the items in your fixlist.txt. Maybe I screwed something up from the first post to my second 5 days later. I apologize if I messed something up, I don't recall doing anything that would have related to those files.

If you need me to rerun any of the initial scans due to the time lapse let me know.

On another side note. It appears my computer still has issues whether the network connection is active or not as it has blue screened on me a few times with the network disabled. So I am still booting to safe mode so that I know I can run scans without blue screening.

Thank you so much in advance!!

I didn't see a way to edit my last post.

However, I felt it was pertinent information. After the latest bunch of scans I have successfully been able to boot into normal windows mode with network connectivity and everything appears to be functioning properly. Thank you so much this far.

Please let me know if anything else is required, my computer is light years from what it was a week ago!

You're welcome. You need to rerun TDSSkiller and look for the below two lines and if they are still there, delete or quarantine ( which ever is allowed )

    07:01:10.0763 1844 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - skipped by user
    07:01:10.0763 1844 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - User select action: Skip

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Sorry, probably a stupid question - but I re-ran TDSSkiller and that line is still there. However, there is the option to either delete or copy to quarantine, so both are allowed. Is there a preferable option between the two?

I will wait to re-run MGtools until I know if there is a preference to step 1.

    Thanks!!

    Use Delete!

  11. Salami

    Salami Private E-2

Ok, thanks. I did that, however when deleting it, my Avast antivirus blocked this action from TDSSkiller and it appears these files are now in the Avast Virus chest. I did not see instructions to disable my AV when running TDSSkiller, hopefully that does not cause an issue, I apologize if it does.

I re-ran TDSSkiller just to be sure & it no longer detected the item that you pointed out.

Should I do anything with those items in Avast?

Attached are the new MGtools logs.

Thank you so much for your help. My computer is running great. Not a single blue screen or threatening AV pop-ups since the initial reboot after TDSSkiller.

You can empty the Virus chest now.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Sweet! I think I'm good and have followed all advice to try and prevent this in the first place - no idea how I got it, I swore I was careful about this stuff! So thank you!

Should I be concerned any of my personal information was compromised, or should I be concerned going forward entering personal info on this computer?

Thanks 10000000x, you are doing the world a great service!

    You're welcome.
Your PC is more than likely safe to use now, but there are no 100% guarantees that once a PC has been connected to the internet that it is safe. ;) It would not hurt you to change all passwords ( for your PC, logins to websites, email, banks....etc ), in fact, it is a great idea to do that periodically anyway.
